Poison salad?
« on: 01 June 2011, 22:06:16 »

Seems if we eat cucumber/salad leaves/tomatoes we could catch e coli. Spain & Germany are blaming eachother but the jury still seems to be out.

I've made up a tomato, cottage cheese, coleslaw salad for work tomorrow but did'nt want to buy my usual celery & cucumber...already eaten the other tomatoes so i know they're ok....& added a tin of Mackerel in brine & a few chick peas with lemon & peppercorns but missing cucumber & celery.

Is it safe to buy from local farm shops & smallholdings?

They think it's from a mainland European farm so anything local/UK should be fine :y :y

I always said all that green stuff was bad for you ;D ;D

It's a case of horses for courses Guy, Ideally all fruit and veg should be pre washed before consumption, preferably in a solution of milton and water, however this process reduces the eating quality of some salad products

If you grow your own you don't have these worries, plus it tastes so much better  :y

I have read quite a lot on this and still don't know where it came from. Might be produce irrigated with sewage (supermarkets pay peanuts for food what do you expect) or contaminated on route or in Hamburg. (town not the food). The effect at this end though is pretty devastating. Producers are having to destroy their food just as they have got it ready for market. It is costing(someone) millions - EU probably. The strangest thing though is the price of cucumbers and other veg is exactly the same in the shops here. Price fixing? You would expect a) no produce b) sky high prices c) rock bottom.
