Goodbye Volvo.
« on: 08 June 2011, 18:20:51 »

Well that's finally it, the gaffer's called time on my old Gobstopper as the rabbit hutch is showing signs of slipping under load & as some of you will know when a truck clutch goes it just goes, no limping it along like you can in a car. One of the lads is on holiday so i'm in his 55 plate Renault til he gets back...auto...!
No idea what i'm getting next but he's not buying any more vollies so it'll be a rental Renault/Daf or he'll buy me a pig awful Scania just 'cos he likes them...i HATE Scannies.... At least i had a night out in the old girl lastnight & i was allowed to do a local run in her when i got back this morning.

Sorry to sound sentimental but when you spend so many hours a week driving/sleeping in any vehicle you kind of get used to it & being a luddite i fear change.

Rust in pieces old girl! :-* :'(

well it wont be rusting so much as resting for a few weeks then it will be shipped to some far off state in africa where it will be fixed and used for the next ten years or so!!! believe me i know!!!
also know how you feel about the truck, as i clocked up 998.872 in one of my old ones(got it new with just 113 on the clock) so so desperately wanted to keep it and hit the million but the boss said i wouldnt make it as the tax ran out the following day and he wasnt going to retax it just so i could hit the magic million!!! :'(

HMMMM. Seems the jury's out on this one. Had a chat with the gaffer today, i'm in the Renault again tomorrow but the regular driver's back on monday so he's renting me "something" until he makes his mind up.
Good news is he's looking at two more Volvos....happily shocked, one of which is an 06 13ltr 460bhp.....

I'm hoping he would'nt have told me if he did'nt have me in mind for it, he's done this before but still came through.

Yesterday he said no more Volvos & i'd grudgingly accepted it. Now i'm going to be praying!! Love my Vollies!!!

Well we picked up my temporary rental today, a 54 plate Daf CF (rather DAFT).....only a low cab......& a frickin' auto!!! Nowhere to put anything, it's a shunt motor, hopeless for tramping. Did a day run to Burnley today & i must admit it pulled well up "Windy Hill" on the M62 but such a basic fleet spec.

Gaffer's looking for a full time truck....I'm Praying for another Volly.  PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ::)

It a 420 or 440?

If you going to be tramping in it, surely you will get something better?  :-/

Post some pics of your Volvo if you get it  :y

Its only natural to feel that way about the old girl given youve spent so much time with her (though I think my better half would see this line of thought as a totally "boy/man" thing ;D), but hope you get something good to replace her. Notice I dont say "new" as every wagon driver I know dreads having the pressure of having a "new" unit, preferring one thats been slightly "run in" instead-ie its had its first few scrapes already so theres not that jumping up and down from the boss to worry about ;D

Well i'm on a night out in this little puddle jumping DAFT tonight. Talk about fleet spec it does'nt even have a 12v supply so i've had to buy a dropper. The empty box i wanted to lift off @6am was'nt booked so had to wait in the yard till 07:30, late for local tip. When i got there the skelly would'nt slide, the truck would go into gear & when it did the load had shifted & fell everywhere. After that i was due in Willenhall @ noon, re booked for 14:00 then the skelly blew a tyre on the A5 @ Brownhills taking the mudwing & bars with it. Now tipping @ 08;00 tomorrow, reloading Dudley.

Parked up on the 460 Cannock & just to rub my nose in it a Globetrotter Volly just pulled in behind me! CHOKED! Thank god it's only a rental. :'(

lol I know where you are mate!!! been there many times meself!
as to Daf, agree the lowcab is a bitch but the h cabs are a very very good truck indeed, plenty of storage and bins, damn good power and believe it or ot although you never fully get to like the auto it does grow on you after a few weeks,
its still useless for fine reversing work though and can easily make you look a right pratt when hooking up to a heavy trailer!!
or an upslope tip can also be a pain, but overall you finsh your ten hours much fresher with the auto than with the manual box,
unless they give you an auto strallis thats hard work!! it just spins the rears up unless you have the weight on the drive axle  just right!! new guy where i worked smoked a set of new rear tyres in just under a week cos he didnt know how to load it properly!!
