I am not sure about this one. Won't it just mean that burglars will just target the elderly or infirm to avoid any problems.

It's a gimmick to compensate for the fact that the tinkers are robbing people instead of being behind bars where they belong, IMHO. And the latest smouldering outburst of the "Judges vs. Government" spat.

And risk a longer sentence?

More likely for householders to take more extreme action just in case

BUT you have to prove you were frighten of your own safety...i.e if burglar is walking away from you,you cannot do anything  :y

mind you sure it can be arranged regardless if the tinker is walking away or not...breaks into my house he/she will have to face the consequences

Before being deployed, we were always told, if you shoot someone and you "believed" to be in danger etc, that was your defence.

The same applies here, if you "believe" that you are in fear of your life, then keep saying that to those in charge!

God help any little (or big) s**t that attempts to break into my house, they'll be under my patio before they can scream!

The last bloke that tried nicking mine & SWMBO's m/bike, ended up in hospital with damage to his face. When the police interviewed me, I said that when he ran away from me, he tripped over the rubbish bags in the street  ;D ;D ;D ;D
