It was starting to jeapordise uncle Ruperts BskyB buyout so he has flushed it down the toilet. In the grand scheme of things it wont matter a great deal to him, as long as the damage has been curtailed and doesnt creep throughout his media empire.
It is a smallish step in the right direction for British culture though. One less gutter tabloid to dumb down the populace.
It would be nice to think it will be the start of a trend, but I wont hold my breath.

It has been stomach churning to watch the sheer hypocrisy of Labour politicians in the last 24 hours, telling us all how evil this Murdoch empire is. Not that long ago they were more than happy to reshape themselves and their principles to fit snugly into his back pocket, and they were very happy to stay there as long as it was bringing the right results at the ballot box.

I agree that this kind of behaviour is more widespread than people think. My daughter attended a seminar last year, where the guest speaker was (a completely shameless) Max Mosley. There were lots of journos there, from all of the major papers.
Max obviously gave the NOTW journos a hard time, but they were as shameless as he was. When they made the point that the whole industry was doing the same thing, but they were the ones with the spotlight shining on them, there were many journos from "serious" papers suddenly staring at the floor with increasingly red faces.
