Hi all I've got a gas BBQ that runs on Butane and I have just checked the cylinder to find it empty, however I have got a full bottle of Propane would I be able to run the BBQ off it?  :-/ I realise that the regulators differ but I have both types.

Nowt wrong with using Propane as a fuel source for the barbie, the only thing you will probably notice is that the Propane burns quicker than it's Butane counterpart for the same given amount of time/heat required.
Given the cost of Propane versus Butane, you'll still be quids in using Propane even though it does burn slightly faster.

you can use either,off the top of my head i think butane runs at 28mbar and propane 37mbar or something like so your bbq will run off either as do most portable gas appliances

Thanks for all the replys everyone It looks like I'll have to be carful not to cremate the burgers with the higher pressure

Propane has a higher calorific value than butane, so burns hotter, so watch those burgers.....

I have out gas bbq piped straight into the caravan (Static) supply so no little bottles to worry about, and the people on the site change the big ones when I need to......

Yep, as others have said, either will do.....with the correct regulator......red for propane, blue for butane, but make sure you get the correct fitting for your bottle of propane.....there are different fittings dependant on make of gas 

My cheapo Tesco's bbq i bought this year for £15  (reduced from £50/then to £30/then to £15/then back to £25) came with a propane regulator, but i had full bottle of butane(handygas), so it was off to local handy gas supplier to get a butane regulator for it (£6)

It's worth checking out how much the refils for the gas bottles are, there can be a big difference 

Handygas 14kg butane refill is about £23 iirc, other brands can be £33-£35

Thats what the one or two controls on the front are for Riche......they turn the flame down

mine just burnt with the lid down, and didnt cook on the low flame, was a bit of a pain to be honest, prefer the coal ones now. much better

yes i prefer charcoal to gas,i aquired a gas one and its shit

I think gas can be good but for the real deal its got to be charcoal, I actually make my own pure lumpwood hardwood charcoal in my garden and it burns very hot and lights in 3 minutes with my custom made weber chimney starter (it looks similar but holds 3 times now charcoal, a whole 5kg bag)
