I was watching BBC news Talkback a couple of hours ago. Some bloke on there who has founded an institute for yoghurt knitting or similar. He said very seriously that the state needs to take the responsibilty to introduce single child families and ensure the cost of meat is greatly increased to reduce its consumption.

I know what you mean Albs, we changed from British Gas to Swalec for gas and leccy a month or two ago, because they were cheaper, and had a note through the door the other day telling us that gas was going up by 18% and electricity by 8% (I think)  >:( >:(

I'm struggling to make ends meet at the moment as it is, I can honestly say that I'll have to have some degree of 'heat or eat' this winter  :(

I'm pretty sure they are not allowed to do that.  Speak to the.Energy Ombudsman.

Thankfully, and for once in my life, I seem to have made the decision to fix at just the right time ::)

"Ofgem is currently looking into whether the new charges represent value for money, and will make a decision on it in October. Most of us already have fairly strong views on whether energy is value for money or not and this new charge is unlikely to improve them." I wonder just what Ofgem will do that takes them another two months....................

I think Ofgem have lost the plot. In fact Britain has lost the plot over energy. I strongly suspect that in years to come folk will look back and say "Do you remember when energy rose by  ONLY 18% a year. Luxury." :o :o

Im currently with EON and had the same letter from there telling me about the 13% (or there abouts) price increases.

Having reviewed the letter and looking at the 'price per unit' for elec and gas, the unit price for me is going up about almost 20% elec and nearly 25% gas!

We have just had the young ilks rioting over 'being under-priveledged'.........and I have a real fear, that, with all these constant increases in bills, and cuts by Councils and government, that in the near future 'Mr and Mrs average' will say enough is enough, and are going to take to the streets, and when that happens, watch the anarchists join in.....the last riots will look like a Sunday day out !!!!!!!!!!! :)

It's time to start stocking up on canned food and bottled water.. and probably heavy duty firearms for the coming apocalypse.

Oh and razor wire.

I have a image in my minds eye of a bunch of 'suits' sitting around a shiney boardroom table, a few bottles of expensive champagne litter the table and the 'suits' look very smug and self satisfied.....

The one at the head of the table says " Well chaps it looks as though we've got away with it again.... Cheers!!! "

Ofgen, Ofcom, Ofwat etc are in my opinion weak quangos who only react once the horse has well and truly bolted, and have been easily manipulated by the utility companies  >:( >:( >:(

There has been a fundamental problem with the privatization of the utility companies. Water companies, there was never any competition and while they were bleating about needing more money for investment, so prices must go up,  many were making 25%+ profits.

Electricity and Gas markets were originally competitive, but this has now to all purposes disappeared. IMHO this is due to most of the utility companies being taken over by state run foreign companies or multinationals. When they were privatized the company rules should have made it impossible for other state run companies to buy any shares in them.

State run industries don't have to produce accounts and are entirely open to their Government's political whims. A possible scenario is the French Government needing more money to invest in their own Nuclear power stations, "then take the profit EDF earns from Le Roast Beefs and invest this", if they want nuclear power, say we can only invest if the English Nuclear Premium Electricity Price is set at this level....

We are all also paying through the nose for useless offshore windmills that don't work very often and is currently the most expensive way to generate electricity.  All based upon an unproven hypothesis called Climate Change >:( >:( >:( >:(

Taxation has reached unbearable levels, if you are in employment on an average wage then your level of taxation with employer NI, employee NI, Income tax, VAT, council tax, fuel tax, car tax, TV tax, alcohol tax, insurance tax, flight tax... is 45 - 55% of your income. If you are a higher rate tax payer then it it is even higher (up to 71% marginal rate).  >:( >:( >:( >:(

Taxation is about plucking the most feathers from the goose with the least hissing, so most people don't realize how much they are actually paying! As far as I'm concerned once you are paying over 50% of what you earn in tax you are a "Slave of the State" in much the same way as Lords had Surfs in feudal times.

If taxation was reasonable, so your effective spending power was 50% more, I'm sure many OOFers that are struggling like me would be much more comfortable.

It makes my blood boil knowing I'm keeping people that prefer not to work, I know some and they are having a much better life than I am at the moment, not to mention keeping dictators in Luxury through UK overseas aid, human rights lawyers triples all round etc.

Personally, as a small businessman I've had enough, the risks to make money to reward ratio with current taxation structures don't stack up and my cost base with things like £2000pa council tax for a 3 bedroom house is too high.  >:( >:( >:(

Now I can sit and moan about it or do something about it, which is why I'm emigrating, once I've sorted my house out to rent or sell. All my business interests are Internet based, so as long as I've got an Internet connection, I can do what I'm doing now anywhere.

My Ukrainian wife and my daughter moved to Ukraine just over 10 days ago where my wife has been offered a teaching job at the school where she used to teach and I'm going to be joining them as soon as possible.  :) :) :)

About 100,000 English emigrate every year, with the current state of the country, personally I think the only surprise is that it is not more.

So ends my rant of the day.  :y :y :y

I agree with most all you say. I think Ofcom was the exception. They regulated the hell out of BT forcing prices down to sensible levels. I pay 40 quid a month for unlimited Internet and get about 1.3 Meg. In Britain ? A third of that and you would get free phone calls and TV thrown in no doubt. BT ended up a shadow of its former self with the 02 arm it was(I think) forced to sell ending up in the hands of Telefonica ( A Spanish giant with a truly terrible customer service reputation)

I hope you find greener pastures in the Ukraine. From personal experience everywhere has its good and bad. Spain for example is no different and a lot more corrupt thatn Britain but the climate has its advantages.

Can you PM me your better half's chicken and pineapple curry recipe please?

BT (and the water comapnies) are unique in that there was/is no effective competition. So OFCOM screwed them to the ground, and never loosened the noose.

As to selling Cellnet, that wasn't OFCOM (might have been OFTEL back then), it was the gross incompitence of BT's Board trying to cover up their shockingly bad management and direction of the firm.

Yes it was Oftel. Shockingly bad management and direction. Agreed. What company allows the mobile arm to be sold leaving it with an antiquated copper distribution, some old ladies with fixed lines and no possibility of getting Internet and some money guzzling foreign operations. A six year old could have done better!
