Gatwick airport advice please
« on: 08 September 2011, 15:01:27 »

I have to pick my son up from Gatwick Airport (south terminal) on Saturday. Have not been there for many years. Can you pick up there ok ? also I have to be there for 2 pm ish. Is there somewhere free to park where I can get a coffee and chill while waiting.
I really hate driving long distances and will probably be there around 10am  :(

Any advice greatfully received.

Thanks for all the advice chaps. We now know what we are going to do.

Thought I would edit this one rather than a seperate post and bring it back to the top.

Thanks again.  :y

Parking is abit of a nightmare and does work out quite costly for a short while.

If you get coffee in Crawley or the services at PeasePottage then get him to give you a bell when his is through and waiting just follow the signs to pickup/drop off points and you can pull up and just sort out luggage and off you go.Much easier and how I tend to do it as daughters are regular holiday travellers from Gatwick.

Short term parking is somewhat expensive - £5.60 for up to an hour. As said by Amber, better to stop somewhere away from the airport until he's ready for picking up.

There is a drive-in McDonalds with car park at the airport. that's where all the Taxi drivers appear to wait and have a coffee. :y

Multi-Storeys at both North and South Terminals...easy to find....bit expensive though.
Don't go to the pick up and leave the car though...they can be a bit aggressive at times and remove unattended cars.
There is a Costa coffee bar at the Arrivals so you can get a seat and wait. :y

Don,t think garage would be too keen on you sat there for 4 hours and the thought of a Crap Donald on a Saturday around Lunchtime fills me with total dread :D :D :D

Park up at PeasePottage services would be my plan  :y especially on a Saturday..its only 10 minutes up the road.(M23) to the South terminal and then simple pick up. :y :y

mixture of what Kevin and Richie do plus move around departure drop off - you have to be careful as I think they are now logging numbers.

Train from Gatwick is great option if it is going in your direction - use this as much as possible

LD normally goes to Pease Pottage Services (couple of junctions South on the M23) and leaves when the call comes through to say they've landed. Then just drive to Pick up area and job done :y :y

Don't wait too long in McD's, my son did last year and got a ticket through the post.

Picked my daughter up from gatwick north a few weeks ago , they now have a ground level pick up car park at arrivals. you get 15 -20 mins free.

I planned it that i arrived an hour after they landed. worked out perfect. Pulled into the pick up car park on ground level and only waited 3 mins. Passengers walk straight out of arrivals & across the road to this car park.

Worked excellent for me, but that was the north terminal, can't vouch for the south. :y :y

As above 60 min limit at gatwick services, theiving bar stewards. parking is expensive, but arriving after flight lands keeps cost down. Parking is the least hassle imho especially if the people you're meeting are not familiar with the airport. Chaos since Baa sold up. >:(

And if you stop anywhere you shouldn't within a mile of the airport, you will only have to wait seconds before there is an armed response unit asking if they can be of assistance.
