« on: 12 September 2011, 00:06:42 »

Hi guys
thought i would ask here since theres a few clever people on OOF.
I have an Broadband with sky so i have a sky email address  which i set up on my mobile so i can recieve emails while i am out and about, recieving is fine but i cant reply to them, it seems sky wont let my send emails from a foreign ip address.
is there anyway around this   i know plenty of people who can send emails from their phones  and i would like to too

What phone? Sounds like a settings issue perhaps...?

I know some ISPs will only allow you to send from its own IP range, assuming you are using the correct pop and smtp settings then it sounds like a block by Sky.
try a google email address and get your sky mails forwarded to it :y

Indeed, many ISPs only allow 'anonymous' sending from their own broadband lines.  Usually to allow sending from your account from another ISP/public wifi, you have to authenticate first, hopefully your phone has that option.

I tried taking all job mails in my mobile and really struggled to do that as it required certificates..

in the end I discovered that its quite disturbing to take mails frequently on the mobile and I disabled it..

I think TB is correct but I had to resort to something else to set up Outlook to send messages which otherwise sat in the Outbox.

If you cannot resolve it yourself there is a Sky workaround - basically you register on Sky Users Forum. Search for a post "How to apply for a Skyuser SMTP account". Think it started back in Feb 2008.

Follow the post requirements for applying - here is the message I got back when I set it up earlier this year.
Authentication is necessary (in Outlook this is in the "Outgoing Server" tab within the "More Settings" option

You have now been setup to use the SMTP server settings as follows...

Username: as supplied (Forum Username)
Password: as supplied
SMTP Server: mail.skyusermail.com
Port: 25

Please note we do not support SSL.

If your username contains a space then the space will have been removed for the SMTP server IE: jo blogs becomes joblogs,

the password is case sensitive,
for any problems can you please use the contact us form and we will try to sort it out ASAP for you.

Terms and conditions please read carefully

By using the Skyusermail SMTP server you agree to the following..

visit http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/skyuser-mail-smtp/ section from time to time to be kept up to date on news, service details and updates.

Any breach of these terms and conditions will result in the following..

Do be aware that some mobile operators do not support access to external mail servers (partcularly via port 25 e.g. Three).

Many, many fixed line ISPs don't either, esp on their DHCP ranges - its too hard and costly to get them removed from spam databases. Spamhaus, for example, want a $700 'donation' per removal.
