5 weeks, simple - I was at HMS Ganges,  Boy Class for 9 months at 15 years old the toughest forces training any Boy got in this country at that age....

Pah! I used to live in Crowthorne and as a young loon regularly took a stroll through the common land to the Sandhurst training grounds and used to watch them (bunch of cissies in the main) then I joined HM Royal Marines as a junior at 16.
9 months of the (I say) the hardest training in the (world) British armed forces. After that, duringmy time in I had the occasion to acquaint myself with several graduates of Sandhurst including HM Prince Edward (joke of a 'man) Sorry but don't rate them at all. Some of them transferred over to RM young officers and tried and failed the YO training which lasts 1 year (including HRH....poof). I was part of the training team for YO's the year that Eddy was there so I do know what I'm talking about. I can tell you some stories!
On the other hand Charlie POW was a different kettle of fish.
He did the All arms Commando course and distinguished himself and earnt the right to wear the coveted Green Beret.

5 weeks is the I.initial bootcamp phase, then its 10 more months after that.  Not just physically demending bit they would push you mentally when you were on the brink of physical exhaustion.  It's the combination which made it tough that and the fact you could he binned at anytime.

I thought the commando course was so easy now that a woman can do it.....

It probably is. I left in 1989 and even then there were new 'rules' where a 'nod' (new recruit) wore orange epaulettes for the first month so the training team knew they were not to be shouted at!
as far as I remember women could complete the All arms commando course way back when, it's just that not many, if ever, did back when I was serving. But like everything, political correctness took over and the madness began!
