Still think its a foolish move not doing the manifold gaskets..... :y

Aye... the rockers and cambelt are fine to do in situ... I would have done the manifolds while out though  :)

Yeah, you too James. And just when would I have put the engine in then?

Fin Fin Fin...

Nobody is getting at you mate.

All I said, is, that if it was me I would have done the manifold gaskets. If other issues such as time constraints, other commitments or anything else meant you didn't want to or weren't in a position to do them - that's entirely your choice, and I respect you've got your reasons.

In fairness to Mark, he didn't suggest changing the gaskets because they are there (to quote your above post). He suggested changing them because on a second hand engine that you haven't heard running (presumption) - you cannot guarantee they don't blow - and as we all know, those particular gaskets are a lot easier to do properly with the engine out rather than in, so potentially it could save you a lot of time and bother.

Looking at it from your side of the fence... if a stud had of snapped on you, then you could have been set back by even longer, so I can also see some advantages in leaving the gaskets be.

Bottom line, this section of the forum is for general chat and sharing of opinions - which will never always be the same. I'm pretty confident in that 99.9% of anything said or suggested here is intented to be nothing but helpful and constructive.

That's certainly all I ever try to do. So my apologies if it came across any differently.

Well, you weren't here were you. I was and so was Dave. The engine arrived at about 3pm. We then had to get it in the car. There was no time to faff around with airy fairy sodding gaskets, that may not even need doing. There is no way I was leaving the engine out overnight and I also had my work car to fix, which as it turned out meant I had to cancel todays lessons and a driving test.

I was not and am not interested in doing manifold gaskets just because they are there. I could have painted the covers pink too, but decided not to do that either.

There. Told.

30 mins work to do two manifold gaskets.......and the chances are one will be blowing which detracts from the value....

Oh good grief!  ::)

I know why Fin did what he did. Time was a major constraint after we were left waiting for a considerable time for delivery of the engine.

When it finally arrived he was tired and frustrated. His mind also was more on how his son is, rather than ensuring everything is done before inserting the engine into the bay.

I know Mark is right when he says the manifolds should have been done with the engine out.

But (with the exception of Mark), we don't always do everything exactly as it should be.

If the engine has a blowing gasket, it will be replaced.
It would have been easier to do out of the car, but hey, such is life. ;)

Not at all, just the sharing of opinions ;)

So when's the next lot of work being done, and when's the completion estimated? :)
