Thing is though there're so many around, hardly anyone bothers repairing them.

At the moment - I have seen car parts go from plentiful to difficult in as short a time as a year.

Its a route I think should be explored......because second hand pars always carry a risk in as much as they are generaly unknown....adn with an autobox simply driving 20 miles on it before removal is not a sign its good (the one on my estate used to drop out of drive once a month....).

For me, I would re-build a box for my own use and fit a second hand one to a project car.....

With the Sunbeam it went from plentiful to very little very quickly, I needed a fixed gearbox as the scrappy ones kept going wrong. Ended up spending £100 on getting the oldest (because it was closer ratio) fully reconditioned.
I can see this happening with all cars after a while - it WILL happen with Omegas, there are not THAT many AR35s out there, many may have been made but nowhere near as many as AR25s. But oneday they wil be difficult to find, so I would start now rather than later, there is not much to go wrong, there is the washer, solenoids, brake band wear, all repairable - there are aftermarket spares, and I can see it being the easiest option in the long term.

Me too. I don't plan on needing a replacement for a while (touch wood) but when the time comes I'd rather put in one I have rebuilt and am confident in than one that came from a scrappy.

Whilst the supply of 2nd hand gearboxes might be safe for a while, the probability of a 2nd hand one being a good one will reduce in time.

OK, so we may lack the skills required to rebuild one now but we won't learn them until we jump in with both feet. I vote that someone donates a knackered AR35 to the cause next time we have a meet and we have a go at rebuilding it, taking plenty of pics and vids as we go.
