Good evening everybody "out there",
I've noticed that my autobox only kicks down from 2nd to 1st when it's in sports mode. Even when crawling along in 2nd in normal mode and you floor it, the box does not drop into first, is this normal? :-/

If I'm doing below 30 ish it will drop into 1st.  I guess, as the change point is 45ish, any faster, and it isn't worthwhile...

Seems I have a problem then :( I always thought it quite dangerous not to be able to drop a cog to get you out of trouble at low speeds without having to press the "s" botton. Any suggestions anyone :-/ I previously drove a granny which would "kick down from 2nd to 1st at 35 mph "very useful"

Mine is a 3.0l (each engine has a different gearbox 'map'), so may be slightly different. Does it drop to first at lower speeds?

Does anyone know how the gearbox control unit knows about engine load? Just wondering if it has a separate feed from the throttle position sensor or does it recieve the information from the engine ECU by CAN or similar?

Could be that theTPS isn't covering the whole range so the gearbox ECU doesn't see full throttle when the pedal's fully down?

The gearbox control itself is all electronic so it can only be an input to that system which prevents it from shifting.

Might be worth a check with a Tech2 that all the sensors are reading sensibly although I'd expect a fault code if they're not.

Have you tried the latest gearbox firmware? I found it radically improved responsiveness at low speeds.

I would think the engine ecu has a little conversation with the gearbox ecu.....probably along the lines......"The idiot in the drivers seat has just shoved his foot to the floor.....and im only doing 2k revs.....be a sweety and change down a gear.....i'll let you know when to change up again"  :y ;D

Well it only has a 'chat' on the later power units, it doesn't on the 2.5/3.0/2.0 units but, it does get coolant temp info and throttle position.

It would be interesting to know if the kick down switch is operating......its part of the throttle cable and can be seen at the back left of the engine bay where the cable passes through the bulk head. Its a black plastic lump with some wires coming out of it.

Also worth checking that the throttle cable only has a little slack in it at throttle end.

Thanks for the replys everyone :y. To answer your inputs in order.
It does not kick down at lower speeds unless it is in sports mode.
I had the gearbox softwear upgraded at the lakes meet.
The kickdown seems fine when in sports mode.
There does not seem to be much play in the throttle cable
Anyone got anymore ideas :-/

if i am toddling about town then it is in 2nd most of the time, if i floor it then it will drop a cog and scoot off, however i don't like razzing it too much so i dont bother

Just a thought, is you throttle cable adjusted correctly...It may not be opening the flutterbyes fully and in turn, NOT activating the TPS to it's stop??? !!!!!
