I have always wondered why they mostly begin with an E. There were some that began with numbers but what about the GT1?

All Lotus cars built at Hethel have a number, or type. The Lotus Omega (Carlton) was Type 104.

IIRC, the only Lotus not starting in E was Carlton, Cortina, Sunbeam and the first few Lotus cars.
Then there was the bike - Lotus 108 (1992): a bicycle ridden by Chris Boardman to win a gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, also known as the "LotusSport Pursuit Bicycle".
My Bro-in-law was on the team that built that little gem!
