Volvo owners.
« on: 16 May 2010, 18:51:06 »

Found this on another forum I visit.
The guy who I know owns a Volvo S60 D5 sports.
He's had a recall from Volvo, he says.....

Just had a letter from Volvo that they are recalling certain vehicles for a check on the "diesel particulate filter" which may cause the oil level to rise above the minimum accepted level.

It needs to be checked and a software update done -- Free of charge
Takes about 40 Min's.

Volvo vehicles affected
- S60, V70, XC70 and XC90 [Model years 2006 - 2009]

He goes on to say, which sounds a bit odd to me

Took the car in to be checked and reprogrammed etc on Friday 14th..

I was told that this is something that could effect all diesel engines or any vehicle that runs on Bio diesel type fuel.
Given a Volvo leaflet !!!

Apparently - "they" have found - the Bio fuel don't always fully combust / burn
-- and some leaches past the cylinders and into the sump
-- making the oil levels in the sump too high..

This then causes problems with the Turbo?? [dont ask me] which could fail.

So what do they do to fix it!!!
Drain oil from the sump to the 2/3 level and tell me to not to fill up higher than that !!
I asked if they had marked the dip stick for the new HIGH -- NO
I asked if there was a new dipstick -- NO

They had done a software up date so that the oil warning light comes on later !!

So who is going to know - if and when the "fitter" checks the oil levels -- they will fill it to the mark on the dip stick -- Oh!!!! -- perhaps you should tell them that said !!

Think a letter to Volvo UK is called for !!

Mick ;)

Volvo have obviously got a problem with that one, and what a strange, very woolley and unscientific method for dealing with it! :o :o

The question must be, apart from the others possible, is what effect does quantities of unburnt bio fuel have on the engine once it enters the main oil circulation? :o

At the very least frequent (1,000 mile) oil changes are surely necessary?! ::) ::) ::)

Umm,,,

that does sound like Volvo at the moment...

I recently had a Volvo V70 D5...

had serious electronic design faults which Volvo still deny ....

Glad I came back to the Omega ....

Oh yes !! :D

At the speed a turbo spins, if it's not properly lubricated it will burn and sieze. I had a saab and I seem to remember something in the book about never turning off the engine while the turbo was running. The drop in oil pressure would kill it.

Don't know why you'd turn off the engine while the turbo...... :o

Talk about curing the symptom. ;D

The fact that the oil is contaminated with diesel, which will break down the oil and cause a lack of lubrication clearly didn't occur to them.

Then again, my boss drives one and, after I convinced him that he doesn't need to go to a stealer for an MOT (and take it off the road for 2 weeks while he waits for an appointment to get sh@fted) he casually mentions on the way back from dropping him off at the local independent that his oil light comes on every time he does round a corner. :o

Me: Top up the engine oil NOW - like before you drive it again.
Him: Well, it's getting serviced in 2 weeks anyway.
