Success, eventually !. First some pics :

I was initially sceptical  when the engine place phoned up and said I needed new guides, but they gave me the old guides and you can see the cracks. They said they hadn't skimmed it because it didn't need it, but would poss do this for the same price. Bill for this was £210, but it had been cleaned and looked good.

new gasket in place ready for the head. You can see the valve marks, they aren't deep its just they have gone thro the carbon to the metal below. Hopefully they haven't damaged the pistons.

What is this bit ?. I still need to get a gasket for it, but Mr Kellogs is holding up so far.

I got it all together last night, checked twice nothing loose anywhere near the cambelt, and started up. She was running on 3 pots, very rough, but it was late, and I wasn't going to risk damaging anything by making mistakes. :P

This morning, I checked the cam followers were all moving and rechecked the cambelt timing and tension. All seemed OK, its worrying how the tension varies depending on how far round you are, eg when at TDC, the tensioner is on the new belt mark, however a bit further round and the belt is loose and can be twisted easily.

I started up again, now running on 4 pots, but the clatter from the head  :o It quietened down to just one or two tapping near the oil filler, but after 5mins ticking over all were quiet.  :y  A gentle test drive and she sounds quiet and feels smooth, so sounds like success.

Just got to get a proper gasket for that wigit, and there is still evidence of mayo in the oil getting pumped to the camshafts so I recon a couple of oil changes to get any debris out are in order.  :y
