there are 2 problems,
1)cam cover gasket leaking oil from the nearside bank of cylinders.Oil leaks enough to cause severe smoke from burning oil on manifold and excessive fumes in car .

2)losing water . water goes down in the header tank enough to set the warning light on . this happens every fortnight and needs approx 1 pint to bring it back up to the level. No obvious signs of where the water is leaking to or from .

3) slight misfire when starting after being stood all night but clears up in about 5/10 seconds of engine running (enough time to clear cylinders ),  this is why it  has been assumed its a head gasket / problem.
there isnt any sigh of water in the oil or visa versa

i hope ive explained a little better .

Ah right follow you now :y

The Cam Covers is an easy one..
As for the water leak...
you say you don't see water dripping onto the floor?
Can you smell the sweat smell of water/anti freeze when the car is warm?
If you were to remove the reservoir cap and start the car up would the water pump out?

Hmmm, well unless there is something very unusual going on, these are all usual omega fixes.

As said, get it to Pete. :y

cant see dripping, dont get a smell, not tried taking cap off res cap but theres a lot of pressure when you release the cap, a lot more than you would expect, even after being stood all night.

v6fletch - that is a hell of an assumption.

Seeing as the garage you use cannot fix a simple cam cover leak, I would strongly urge you to consider using another garage to diagnose the faults before agreeing to this fairly drastic course of action :o :o :o

well, potentiallyit possible for the two faults to conbine in head gaskit failure as there is an oil way in the hg area near the v.

BUT

The fact that an attempted repair of cam cover gaskits has stemmed the flow temporarily would suggest hg is NOT the problem. There for changing the hed is not the answer.

But needs eyes in to confirm before waisting anymore time money and grief.

Well thats sudgests its not overly serious as if it was headgasket the pressure would not be holding that long  :y

It sounds to me like it needs little more than a compitent person using good parts to look at it for half a day  :y
