driving a HG failed freelander
« on: 04 July 2007, 19:28:18 »

still after a head gasket failed freelander, i might be able to get it very cheap!

Its a 2001 1.8 on a Y plate, not sure on exact spec. But when i could get it for 3 figures i think there is some money in it  ;)

Question is how far could you drive a freelander with a nakered HG? - Or is it time to invest in a tow pole?

Second question, if i collected the car and towed it back on a pole with the Senny or Omega, does the Freelander need insurance or is it covered by mine?

EDIT -  Obviously someone would be driving the freelander when I am towing....  ::)

If it is towed, I believe it needs tax and insurance. If on a trailer, then no.

Check weight of freelander, may be over the tow weight.

And do not drive it.

I guess it depends on which way the HG has failed and how bad ?

I drove my Meggaf or ages with the HG knacked just kept it topped up with water as it was coolent going into the pots/exhaust gases pressurising the coolent system.

First question - answered. Yes it will drive. But no its not recommended.

I sold a rover 25 vvc with failed head to a guy in Bristol, who flew up, collected the car and drove it slowly and cautiously back south. Boot full of coolant and one eye constantly on temp.

I`d reccommend a tow pole.

If you get that for 3 figures you have a serious serious bargain as the repair is a £300 job and that car is tstill in the 3k bracket. Off the top of my head...

3k was what i had in mind too, a customized AT search for 2001 year freelanders came back at 3-3.5k  :)

I am 99% sure its tax & mot has expired (part of the reason i can get it very cheap)

a few assumptions in the model but......

http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/used-prices/Valuation.aspx?deriv=19422&plate=66&buysell=buy

Cheers, I think it might be a GS actually, alloys and trim look similar to the one being sold.

I remember him working it, he did have it running for 20 mins or so without smoke. Problem is the drive back is 90% motorway miles

Good point, i did get quotes before from High Wycombe to Brackey, came back at around £60... so prob looking at £80. But as you say its a small outlay, when considering the profit.  :)

If it has a serious misfire, driving it wil knacker the cat if it's not already and maybe risk more damage to the engine.

To tow, it needs to be road legal if all 4 wheels are on the ground. Tax, insurance, MOT.

Do you have breaikdown recovery? Could you go and collect it, drive away and "break down" a couple of miles up the road?

Getting it picked up sounds like a winner if there's plenty of cash in the project anyway. Less hassle and risk that way.
