Should have posted this months ago and with the onset of severe weather thought I'd eat humble pie and pass on the info....
4 Omegas, 2 from almost new. (4 or 5 months old). OEM tyres Michelin Pilot... (Replaced with Pirelli, Michelin, Continental)
As cars got older decided 2.2 no longer justified "expensive" tyres, 3.2 did. Drove both cars extensively on the limit including track days. Advocated budget tyres alot here because Omega can wear tyres quickly whatever is fitted so why wear out "premium" tyres when you can keep fitting "budget" tyres twice as often... Surely a NEW budget tyre is better than a part worn premium tyre... You know the logic...
Budget tyres DRY grip can be equal to Premium tyres BUT without any doubt I can now say in wet or greasy conditions budget tyres are not equal to premium tyres. Also, loss of wet weather grip seems to escalate with budget tyres as their wear increases compared with the premium brands.
I can now say with 100% certainty that I would no longer endorse budget tyres for road use as inevitably it will rain at some point. (Track days are different, You can change your tyres.)
Lack of grip in slippery conditions even at very low speeds can be quite astounding with the budget tyres I've tried whilst the "premium" tyres still manage to hold on.

It's just not done, old boy.

 :)

But - ta for the advice, cos I've got four new tyres to buy this week - gonna go for decent part worn tho - 4x uniroyal rainsports with minimum wear (came off a BMW 5 series that got wrote off with <1000 miles on it) for 30 quid each.

When I had my 320d M Sport you could go round any corner at very high speed in the dry wouldn't have known it was a budget tyre at all, in the wet you couldn't pull off at any speed, (and I mean pulling off slower than normal) without spinning and the traction control having to step in, but that made no difference what so ever. I always remember going around not even a sharp bend at 15 mph in that and the back end sliding out at that speed, then corrected that and it went the other way. Put it this way if it rained and I had a motorway journey, I stayed at home  ;D

IMO the fact some budget tyres work so well in the dry is dangerous. It's difficult to comprehend that a tyre can loose sooooo much grip in the wet by comparison. The difference in performance is ridiculous, unbelievable in fact. Well, I could not believe it anyway  :o

Ok they make them the best they can for the money and we get a level of grip per budget. So it's good they grip well in the dry of course, but there must be people get caught out when it rains with such a difference in wet and dry grip.

When I bought my latest Omega there is a recipt for £650 ish for 4 Michelin Pilot Premacy tyres. These tyres are still on, about 3mm left. I find them bad in the dry and great in the wet when I want the back end to step out.

I gave up on Michelin back in the late 80s. And I will not buy another set.

Continental Sport Contact 3's are my favourite tyres, Avon ZZ3's aren't too bad. They're around the only tyres I'd buy, bridgestones are good for grip but make the most awful road noise :o

Pirelli p6000 front and Brigestone potenza rear on this one. Bit more noise in the car than the last omega on sc3 all round. But the inside right front has a camber issue due to wishbones currently. It has a funny raised block front edge/worn down back edge to the tread blocks, so I guess that won't help the noise.

Michelin are OK if you can stop them sheening over. I have found a good way of doing this, but

a) I'm sure the local police disagree
b) The tyres don't last

Don't think I'd ever have another set of ZZ3s on an Omega. Fun, but with a life of 4k, too rich for me...

Totally agree, proper grippy but dont last..

That I agree with, they haven't lasted brilliantly to be honest, Contis are my favourite, but the ZZ3's have a very nice tread pattern.
