Driving back from chavtown on sea today I noticed that unmistakeable sound of metel on metal from the rear of the car, so proceeded cautiously, staying off the brakes when possible.
Too late for stealers so had a root about in the shed and found a set of half worn pads, so decided to put them in to get me going again. job didnt take long but I had a bit of a poke around while I was there, and noticed my o/s rear spring has the bottom coil or two missing, no doubt due to our pothole ridden third world type roads.
This is the third one in 18 months.

You really been having springs snapped due to potholes?
I would have thought you'd just get a nice dent in your wheel and a pinch flat at worst?

Oh and maybe a bent wishbone or similar on some weaker cars.

It has been increasingly common for cars to have broken springs in recent years, it used to be quite rare. I cant think what else would cause it.
Not necassarily big deep potholes as such but lots of smallish ones,roughened road surfaces, poorly repaired etc all weaking the springs until they cry enough. Thats my theory anyway.

Until 18 months ago I had never had one break in 30 years.

Omega rear springs seem prone to corrosion. The cheap patterns, eg KYB, seem even more prone (but still more cost effective than GM).

Once the corrosion sets in, the srings will promptly fail.

14 years and still on the original springs.. no corrosion..

Wiped the dust off and they look like new, no signs of corrosion. Genuine GM too iirc.
