Towing...
« on: 19 July 2011, 17:47:09 »

iirc, it mentioned a while back that it's not efficient to tow a 'van on LPG?

Is that the case??

TIA  :y

Also waiting to see how much grief I'm gonna get for having a pikey house too, now!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Cheers Martin!  I usually get 22mpg towing on petrol, but I thought I saw a post a while ago saying that using LPG doubled the consumption. ie, I get 200miles on 45ltrs so I'd only get 100miles towing.
Just wondering what would be more economical to use?  :-/

You should see about the same drop in consumption towing as you do solo ;) :y

Might have been me that you saw saying doubled consumption when towing... Depends on a lot of things TBH. For me it's not actually that bad but as I rarely see 22mpg solo I'll never see it towing a big, 5 berth van ;) ;)

Hi LD, not sure if I got it clear in my post, so I apologise.

I get 200miles on 45ltrs LPG solo. (Not towed with LPG yet)

Towing on petrol I get 22mpg. (5 berth pikey van)
Solo on a run 27mpg
Mixed town/run 24mpg

So this is where I was wondering whether to use LPG or not.  :-/

LPG is cheaper than petrol. The difference in economy should be the same (near enough) between petrol and LPG whatever so I always use LPG. I rarely run on petrol at all TBH, apart from the other day when I'd switched to petrol when I'd started as it was hunting on LPG (startup enrichment as the engine was warm) and forgot to switch back :-[ :-[

Just goes to show that mine is set up properly though as I couldn't tell when driving it ;D

You actualy save MORE in cash terms when towing than you do on petrol  !!!

EG ...

solo

I get 23 mpg on petrol ... at £1.35.9 / litre (£6.17 gall) thats 26.8 pence /mile

I get 18 mpg on LPG at 73.9 p/ltr (£3.35 gall) thats 18.6 pence /mile .. so solo I save 8.2 pence every mile.

Towing

I get 17 mpg on petrol which is 36.3 pence/mile

I get 14 mpg on LPG which is 23.9 pence /mile

so the saving when towing is 12.4 pence / mile

Far more cost effective to tow on lpg than petrol .. :)  simple because you use more fuel when towing ... so you are using more of a cheaper fuel rather than more of an expensive one .. :)

LPG everytime here .. :)

BTW .. the drop in consumption from petrol to LPG is about 20% .. and remains constant whether towing or not. It is NOTHING to do with LPG being a "bad" fuel or any such rubbish .. it is simple physics.

ALL engines actually burn a MASS of fuel .. not a volume, and LPG is 20% lighter than petrol ... if you were to supply a kilogramme of petrol and compare it to kilogramme of LPG .. the range would be virtually the same.

HTH  :)
