Anyone know if this would be an MOT fail?
« on: 04 September 2011, 17:04:22 »

Booked the Nissan in for an MOT tomorrow, and doing my checks found an inoperative indicator (broken bulb holder, d'oh!) and this - a rust hole on the jacking point for the drivers side sill. It's about 12" rearward from the return for the wheel arch at the front of the sill..

If it's likely to fail and need welding then I think it's curtains for the car, sadly.. shame as I've been holding on to it for years  :-[ rather attached to it now..

I would say that would fail as its within 12 inches from the seat/seatbelt mounting points :'(

Damn, I forgot that requirement - yep you're right, you can see one of the seat bolts in the second picture, in fact :(

It may be curtains for the Nissan, then :'(

Almost certainly.. it's just the more I look at the car, the more I realise how tatty it is. It probably wouldn't even fetch £500 on eBay these days.. much as I'd like to keep a fun car after I get rid of the MR2, maybe I need to go back to being a one car guy for a while  :-/

I think the problem is worse than you think. Looks to me as though the sill has been filled and painted over at some time.  :( :(

What makes you say that? I couldn't find any filler - spent a while whacking it with a ratchet to see if there were any other hidden holes.. (lots of rusty metal, though!)

;D I never did learn to weld.. it is on my list of 'skills to learn', though - but I think practicing on something easier might be a good start ;D

Did call a mobile car welder, though.. will get him to pop out and see how much it'll be. <£100 I might well do it, >£100 and it's off to the scrap yard in the sky for it.

I haven't had the mobile welder out yet :) I found a bloke who can come and look at it next week, though.. which is OK, since it still needs a working indicator to pass an MOT anyway - and finding the indicator sub-loom on eBay (for a UK car) seems to be somewhat difficult!

Get it welded.. :y its not as bad as our Astra. Both sills front to back were hanging in tatters. £440 it cost. Still cheaper than replacing the car.  :o

Aye - got a busy week & weekend coming up, but after that I'll get back on to the mobile welder.. or failing that, a friend of mine told me he's already replaced the entire sills on one of his cars himself and he's happy to come 'round and do it..

Although I trust a professional not to set fire to my garage slightly more  ;D
