If it’s Dixons you'll probably end up with an appalling oversubscribed and unreliable internet service and a cheap and obsolete Packard Bell laptop that’s been kicking around in their warehouse for the last 18 months. At the end of the day there’s no such thing as something for nothing and Dixons Stores Group are one of the biggest shysters on the high street. Jump in grab yourself a free crappy laptop and tie yourself into a long contract for terrible internet service. The contact will inevitably last a lot longer then the freebie "managers special" laptop. If Dixons are involved bad service is 100% guaranteed.   >:( >:( >:( >:(

DONT DO IT

I saw this today......

Only downside i can see is the 2G limit / month for £14.99.....tho i suppose you could upgrade to unlimited download for £19.99....this also gives you free national and international calls anytime.....doesnt mention local calls but if you dialled the local area code first....would it then?  :-/

And you have to sign up for 2 years...

Any comments?

Saw this myself the other day and you have to be with BT, and apparently Orange have taken over the old Wannado and they have problems, my sister saw it on Watchdog....

I went into PC world to have a look anyway when I went passed, you can get better Laptops than the free one but you have to put extra money to get it.

The Orange/DSG offer is a low spec Advent laptop, using Orange's ISP provided (initially) over BT's IP Stream product.

Orange were formally Wanadoo, formerly Freeserve (then part of DSG), and do have customer service issues at present.

I'm a member of a mailing list where a lot of Orange / Freeserve / Wannadoo customers are having problems and have been for many months. Their mail is being bounced with such a frequency that the mailing list software keeps unsubbing them. That can only mean Orange are running the service on a shoestring using overloaded or misconfigured servers that aren't able to cope with the volume of mail.

Sounds to me like a package that's been cobbled together to look like a great bargain to shift some laptops.

2 Years is an awful long time to put up with dodgy service...

basically like a phone contract, but giving you a laptop instead of a handset, and an internet deal instead of texts

remember, nothing's actually for free is it!

Absolutely......but im paying the same price with my isp anyway at the moment...so  :-/

The basic pc is a bit naff, 256 ram is very low, I anticipate a slow formation of pages from the web...  I've not looked at the spec too closely.. But, very low, 2002 kinda spec....  realistically it would be better to pay for an upgrade..  the 150 quid'ish one is about the min spec for a decent laptop in my eyes...  free internet calls are with restrictions too, don't forget your BT line rental too... it all adds up.... It all depends what else you want to use it for...  so I'm quite biased / opinionated....  In 2 years time the basic one will be like an abacus compared to a calculator...

Broadband! gotta be careful what I say... BUT, a spade is a spade, OK!  I work with broadband installations everyday, all for a vast array of providers.....  the one I rarely have problems with and I'm sending this message over it right now.. is,

The clue is :-

512Mb RAM is minimum now for XP, that laptop will be painful.

BT as an ISP are one of the better ones now, still not a patch on Zen Internet ;)
