lumpy idle
« on: 11 October 2006, 10:23:00 »

Hi

Got into the car last week and the idle of the car was very lumpy and on the verge of cutting out,  It seems to sit at around the 800rpm for a few seconds the drops to the 300 mark wher it nearly cuts out, Then climbs back up to the 800 ,
I have cleaned the icv 3 times and its still the same, Checked all the breather pipes and there all clean.

Am i missing something?

Andy

Which one on....the 2.0 or the 3.0?

If the 2.0 check the EGR valve...might be sticking open (possible on the 3.0 to but much less common)

Just checked to see if the ecu had stored any codes although the eml has not come on and it flashed up codes 0505 and 0100.

I belive that they are 0505 = idle control valve and 0100 = maf sensor.

Surely they would'nt have gone at the same time would they??

Anyone??  :'(

Hi Andy, strangely enough, that's two fo the codes that I'm getting with my uneven idle problem too! I improved mine by clearing the pipe that is located beneath the injector rail on the inlet manifold. It is connected to the thinner of the two rocker cover breathers. I'd checked the rubber pipe previously but it was the metal bit going onto the manifold that was blocked. My idle now evens out but if I rev the car when warm or press the brake pedal it starts to fluctuate again. Sounds like we've got a similar problem, I'll keep you posted with any progress I make.

Cheers jim

With regards to fault codes, if the engine is behaving strangely because of one fault, it will often chuck codes into the equation as a result, because other sensors can feed strange info back to the ECU if the engine is not running right, confusing it.

Although a good indication usually, Don't always take the fault codes as gospel.

On the 2.0, check out the big breather (metal) pipe going from the block at the back passenger side of the engine, it's usually mega gunged and requires cleaning (in my case drilling)

This is an extremely important part of the breather system on the 2.0. And as posted previously, make sure you get ALL breather pipes totally clean.

Check all your vaccum pipes are in place.

As mad as this seems, these 2.0 engines love oil and filter changes with fresh VX 10/40 semi synth oil. I once bought a 2.0, and when I picked it up it ran like crap... on draining the oil out it was more like gear oil - at least a 20/50 - and once I put the right stuff in there with a new filter I swear it made a difference to the running of the car.

Also check when your fuel filter was last changed - very important. if you don't know when, just change it, they cost pennies and can be changed in 10 minutes.

Although check the basics, such as plug leads, (when did you renew your plugs?!) .. oil in plug wells making leads deteriorate (more common on v6 though)....

I wouldn't rule out the DIS pack, but it's not that common to fail on the 2.0

Put some fuel system cleaner through with half a tank of fuel remaining

Post up your progress with this, if you're still stuck I'll try and get my brain into gear some more.

I've had a few 2.0's so I've experienced all these same problems :)

The MAF code you have sounds like a possible leak in the air intake, check all connections to the MAF and confirm all the jubilee clips holding the air intake together are nice and tight, see if this makes any difference.

The ICV error is the connector on tight and are there any signs of damaged wiring.

As nixoro says, air leak. Thats why its flagging MAF. It knows its receiving more air (rpm and lamda values) so is flagging the maf as faulty...
