AUTOBOX NOT ENGAGING!
« on: 10 October 2006, 14:27:48 »

I have an ooomega 2.5 TD CDX Auto Gearbox, AR25 AUTOBOX
I have recently repaired the frontend for which the engine had to comeout, i have put the engine back in and have bolted everything correctly. I drove the car for about 10 mins for a test run, everything was great, i then parked it in P and left it to idle for approx 30-40 mins.

I then went to drive the car again but found i couldnt get any gears? I couldnt believe it i could move the stick to wherever i wanted but the car just wouldnt engage into a gear so i could move it, forward or reverse!???The lights on the gearstick comeon to show i have changed gear. But no gear!

I have checked absolutly everything or so i think i have! I have changed the Auto fluid and filter, which was a light browny colour, but is now a lovely red colour again! The torque convertor is spinning, i have checked the fuse and that is fine, all the wiring inside the sumps is fine nothing has comeoff. The gearbox rod is working as it should, but i 1 thing im not sure about is should the propshaft be constantly spinning?? Cos mine doest move at all!!! Could someone please help me. But when i move the stick into R the reverse lights comeon! All the wiring to gearbox seems fine.

The computer display also shows Check Automatic gearbox after a few mins??

I would appreciate any advice/help on where to look or what it could possibly be. E-mail asifzamir20@aol.com
Thanks

mine is a 3.0 auto, and TBH i think that the prop (im assuming you mean drive shaft from the autobox to rear diff) spinning all the time would cause your car to move forward/reverse all the time, the vehicle has to be in gear for the prop to turn (ie: driving the rear diff and the wheels.)

unfortunately i cant help any further than that as im not experienced in this area, but im sure someone who's more knowlegable on autoboxes will be along soon.

hopefully my input has put your mind at ease regarding the driveshaft.

best of luck.

The propshaft definately doen't spin until the car moves, if it does, your diff is knackered! I'm sure one of the autobox experts will be able to point you in the right direction.
Just a thought, did you engage the torque convertor into the gearbox properly when you refitted the engine?

Cheers Jim

i have made sure that the torque convertor was engaged into the gearbox properly, i know this because the car drove for ten mins until i parked it.

Could the torque convertor have slipped the lugs of the gearbox, so that although its spinning, it isnt actually turning the gearbox???????

My propshaft doesnt move at all so i guess it isnt engaging into gear, even though the gear stick is moving? What could be the prob?? Just changed the gearbox oil and filter.

The propshaft will not move until the car starts moving.

Sorry I can't help anymore.

IF, following a rebuild it drove for a few mins and then stopped, I'd put my guesses on something electrical-ECU related, such as something come adrift or not plugged in.

It doesn't sound mechanical if the box was mechanically sound before...

does anyone know if the gearbox ecu has its own relay??
What about a diagram for my car showing what each of the relays are for and fuses???
This would be most helpfulThanx

DOES THE GEARBOX HAVE A RELAY IN THE ENGINE BAY?

unlikely. gearbox ecu is up near internal fusebox if that helps.

sounds like its mechanical though - unless your are getting a gearbox warning on MID...

Erm guys!!!!

The linkage has just popped off by the sounds of it. Check the rod from the gearlever to the box is still connected. My money is that you forgot to put the circlip back on or it has come off. If so, £100 in the ronnie fund please! :) If the linkage is working, check the sector hasn't been disturbed on re-assembly. There should eb a 10mm bolt holding the selector onto the gearbox. For bette access, undo the 13mm bolt from the gearbox mounting to the exhaust, then using a damned good jack, undo the gearbox mounting and lower it down about 6" to see the selector properly.

I will bet £100000000000000000000 that the gearbox is fine.

On the other hand, it is an AR25 which you don't want on a TD!

The rod is fine its moving as usual! So you think it could be the selector? Wouldnt that mean the lights on the stick would malfunction??
Anybody know of any cheap tech 2 in HIGH Wycombe??
Would a paperclip test show me error codes on the gearbox???
