Sealed 4 life
« on: 19 October 2006, 15:03:38 »

Was thinking of getting auto tranny and rear diff fluid changed since at 149K.  Several places wouldn't do it.  Talked to one place today and he said it's a dealer only job, something about hooking up the computer and doing something with the temperature.  He went on to say that the g/b and rear diff were sealed for life and you shouldn't change fluid unless problems.  In fact, changing fluid could dislodge something and cause problems in the tranny.

Works for me!  I'm in cost-containment mode right now with the Omega.  Still need to change the engine oil, but trying not to spend any money on it unless absolutely necessary.

There all talking......well yes....you know what I mean

Transmission fluid is a sump off job, not difficult.

Will be doing a how to on diff oil change very shortly (got to do mine and put some BOA 90LS in it as it has LSD)

Yes, well, I've had new engine oil riding around in the trunk for about 4 weeks now.  It may be easy, but it is also messy and requires jack stands.  I'm also not in a rush to pay someone 80 quid for an oil change, 100 for tranny, and probably another 50+ for the rear diff.  I'll find someone that will do the engine cheaper and the rest can wait for the next owner.

a tyre outfit local to me (STS Man on Wheels) will do an oil & filter change using semi-synth for £30 ... so I'd have thought something along those lines might be worth a go, just make sure it is semi-synth they use. I say that, as they charge £20 for a change using mineral oil ...

If you already have the oil in the boot of your car you may as well do it yourself , wont cost you anything then and will only take 20-30mins!! :y :y

Didn't you read what I said?  ;)  Messy and need jack stands, not to mention decent place to do it.  Obviously hasn't happened in 4 weeks . . .  ::)

Yeah, that's the kind of place I need.  Everything around here seems expensive . . .  :(

Got some axle stands in Cov, if you want to use them, and the garage, you know where it is ;)

I know what you mean, I am planning a auto g/b ATF change myslef, not easy with central London street parking.. and you need 4 axle stands to keep the car level while checking the oil.

My concern about working under the car while parked in the street is that I could have my feet run over by a passing car, or that a car trying to park behind/infront will bump my car (as they do) and knock it off the stands - while I'm under it...

As for the sump, it is best to drop both sumps, but if you need to do this in a hurry you could use a 500cc syringe and replace (most) of the ATF through the filler hole. But you will not get rid of sludge and fine metal bits, you will not be able to clean or inspect the filter, and you will not be able to get out the ATF from the small sump...

With regards to 'sealed for life', this is not technically un-true as Vx only specifies auto g/b ATF change under 'extreme conditions', i.e. police cars and taxis, otherwise from Vx point of view the ATF is for life. This is of course false economy, but I can't blame the garages for looking it up in Autodata and seeing that there is no change interval specified for the ATF.

Im in the same boat Theo......no room and I think its a messy job too, but £80 is a  :o price.

You wanna find a back street garage you can trust. I supply the oil and filter and costs me £20.....tho i have heard places like ATS will do it for £30-£35 using semi synth.
