Please Help! No markings on new cambelt.
« on: 02 November 2006, 10:02:49 »

I have just started on my car, was hoping to do the cambelt / aux belt and water pump today.

Fortunately for me i decided to check all the parts i'd got from Vx before stripping everything down, and I noticed there are no marks on my new cambelt for rotation direction, or for the positions on the bottom of the crank and on each of the cams etc. Only marking on the belt is the bar code and the bit where it says do not crimp.

How will i know if i've fitted it correctly if there are no marks on it?

I called my local Vx garage and asked if they had another cambelt kit in stock (9201887) which they did. I asked them to check that one and it was the same.

What do i do??

Line it up with the old one and using chalk, copy the lines across in the right place!

That does sound like a genius plan, my fear is stripping everything down to find that the belt thats on there already has no markings on either!

Yep, that would be a real pain. When I ordered mine from AutoVaux, the marks looked like they were in the wrong place, most of them lined up but one didn't so we just ignored the one that was out.

No marks at all though would be a problem.

If you are worried that your current one has no marks (or they have worn off) I would return the kit and buy one from elsewhere to see it it has marks on.

Sorry, that is outside my area of very limited knowledge. Hopefully someone else can answer that one

On the one I got from them the white markings were correct but the yellow ones weren't

Thanks guys. Ok well i'm not going to attempt it at the moment. I will see if Vx will fit with me supplying the parts. If not, then I may have some parts for sale!

Well done on becoming junior member.  Never seen a GM belt without timing marks.  Wonder if they have a bad batch....

Having worked for several different car manufacturers over the years I was always taught to mark everything up with tip-ex. Most belts i've seen come with timing marks on them but if you paint your own marks on the belt sprockets at least you'll know they're right.

Having not worked on the V6 Omega's would I be right in assuming they're a 24 valve motor with twin cam heads??

What I used to do with the twin cam Toyotas and Lexus was to line all the factory marks on the top and bottom pulleys to TDC.
Then apply a paintmark to 1 tooth of the bottom belt sprocket and an opposing mark on the block, then with the cams I used to paintmark the factory marks on the sprockets and opposing mark on the head but as an added safety we also used paint an extra mark on each sprocket facing each other.

So on the left cam you'd have a mark at 12 o'clock and one at 3 o'clock and on the right cam you have one at 12 o'clock and one at 9 o'clock. This was to allow for the cams springing round when the belt was taken off.
The good thing about the 2 marks on the cams is that if one does move you'll see as neither of the marks will line up. :y

Hope this helps (but probably completely different on these Vauxhall things!!)

Cheers

twin cam per head, so quad cam.

markings required to get the belt on correctly before timing the cams up...

When Mark changed mine (it was originally changed under warranty by the Vx dealer) he said the one he took off wasn't a GM cambelt!
