idler removal
« on: 13 November 2006, 17:04:58 »

I'm trying to remove the steering idler , but I'm stuck, can't get the arm off the center bar . the remover I have is for the track-rod ends .Need a (KM-146-01 ) so I'm told . Anyone know where I can buy?-borrow one?. Tried Halfords ( local) haven't got one. Car failed MOT, have 8 days to fix it. I've got the new part , but I'm stuck. Any ideas would be appreciated.  :-?

Remove it from the body bracket section and swivel it towards the passenger wheel so its inline with the steering arm.

Place a wedge (i.e. wedge style ball joint splitter) between the arm and idler and tap it in to provide some pressure.

Using two hammers, hit either side of the remining fixing with a slight upwards motion......works every time for me.....

That was quick Mark!,.I had thought of using two hammers, ie squeezing it out, but worried about doing  damage to the center bar. Don't want to have to remove the center bar-- if I do any damage. The steering box drop arm would be another problem. Many thanks mate , will let you know. :y

As you said "Mark", two hammers will do the job, and it did . Have a dozen taps and it came off. Sounds a bit painfull doesn't it ?.  Anyway my friend many thanks , Nobby. :y
