I've just replaced both front struts as part of an overhau of the front suspension - only problem is that when I lower the car to the ground, the top plates are now about half an inch clear of the body when looking inside the bonnet area. I don't remember any clearance when I started - but I didn't look particularly until the car was off the ground.
Anyone help please?

I've just removed one of the struts again and looked at the rubber bearing arrangement at the top of the strut.
It looks impossible to get the top plate (the big washer under the bonnet) to seat against the bodywork with the car on its wheels - the only thing that could have gone wrong is if my rubber bearing unit has been significantly compressed.
Would it be possible for someone to have a quick look under the bonnet and tell me if your top plates are sitting against the bodywork or have an airgap underneath (half inch in my case) please?

Top plate should clamp onto the inner wing, have you got the plate the correct way up ? Is the top section of the damper shaft correct for your car ?

Most odd - I've compared the old and new damper shafts - they are identical, the plates are the correct way up, and both sides are the same.
I've also had a look at a VW Golf - this has the same thing (plates are even higher than mine).
