Doing a minor service on the 'second' car (1.2 Corsa X12SZ) and noticed that the oil wanring light was not lighting - checked the bulb, and guess what, it was the switch.  As I was draining the oil, decided to renew the sump gasket at the same time, 'cos there are a few 'weeps' around the seal.  Got the bits, undid all the bolts and ....it no want to move .  Applied gentle persuasion with mallet and bit of wood, but the bloomin' thing will not shift.  Any ideas apart from 'get a bigger hammer'?

I asume you removed all the bolts including the 3 at the gearbox end (one bolts into the sump from the egarbox side which is often missed).

Think there is 19 or 20 bolts all in.

yep... bolts around gearbox area often missed.

I think so............. there were plenty (19 or 20 - I didn't count and I did not have any left over after I put them back) and I had a light, but I can check again tomorrow to see if there was one hiding at that flywheel end. Thanks

Yes pretty much like MDTM said

3 bolts for the gearbox access plate/cover (not that its any good) and 10 bolts or so for the sump

you will need to drop the lower exhaust manifold, I cant remember if the X12SZ's are a 2-piece funnymold, so if not then you will need to remove it from the head to gain adequate access to remove the sump

Thanks for the suggestions - Just double checked - I had removed all the bolts (and the gearbox/ flywheel cover plate was not there to start with, so didn't miss those),   I am not too keen on 'sammy', 'cos I would like to be able to reuse the sump!

So - I think I need to rig up some contraption to apply a bit of 'shear' stress and then continue with the soft faced mallet gentle persuasion

Did it!  so some feedback - after consulting my my nephew who is a highly respected 'tech' (just about to leave a Vx dealership and go back to a motorsport tuning company where he earned his spurs) - I used an implement for removing weeds between paving slabs and the bigger hammer (not sammy ) to break the baked on gasket 'seal' wherever I could and then used my little hydraulic bottle jack (with a bit of wood to spread the load across the sump) between the 'chassis' crossmember anr the rear of the sump and eventually it broke the seal at the back - still need more persuasion to get the front lip to release, but all back together ok and no leaks (so far!).

It did take an age to get the old gasket etc off the sump rim (almost worth paying £40 for a new one), and my nephew did say that he knew of a case where one mechanic had removed all the bolts but not got the sump to move - another had thought the job was finished, so refilled the oil and sent it out - the sump did not fall off until a week later
