Door Opening Problems
« on: 03 March 2007, 14:09:30 »

I've got two problems with different doors (different cars actually):

1. Door unlocks ok, and inside handle works fine, but requires a real yank to open it from the outside.  Its the same effect whether it has just been unlocked or opened and closed a few times.   Hopefully just the handle mechanism needs lubricating,  but what is the best way of accessing it?  Should I remove the door card etc and access from inside (I'm not sure from the Haynes pictures that the handle mechaism will be any better accessible from inside) or is it worth squirting wd40 in the key hole?

2. When unlocking with the remote, the central locking fires and all doors can be opened except the drivers door which requires the key to be inserted and turned.  The knob has come up, but apparently not quite enough.   Once 'opened' with the key the door opens and closes fine.

Appreciate any suggestions before I start removing the door cards.

Cheers,

Ian

I think you would be best to take off the door card and lubricate the mechanism. I had a problem with the door handle itself where although the central locking opened the lock okay, the door handle didn't always feel secure when opening the door. Often it required extra force as you say, and seemed to be 'missing' a relevant component. I took the door card off, peeled back the vinyl sheet and did my best to get at the mechanism with some WD40. Problem solved  :)

I had this exact problem in december, it seemed to fix itself when it wasnt so cold outside. mine did it all the time, but only for a couple of weeks, but since then it's been no trouble whatsoever at all!!

i'd just keep my eye on it personally and see if it sorts itself out before taking the doors apart, as it might simply just be a chill in the air that causes it

Generally worse in cold damp conditions...

I've had problem 2 for a fair while, but probably not since before the winter.  Either way global warming isn't advancing quickly enough so I need to sort it.

The Boy - I assume its problem 2 that you are referring to on the 'lazy cdl motor'?  By lazy I assume you mean 'on the way out'.  What's the best source for replacement? (Breakers/dealer/..)

On the sticky door handle problem - can anyone advise if access to the handle mechanism is any easier from inside the door?

Cheers!

Yes, I was. Not sure on best place, I imagine they are expensive from dealer, but a breaker may be old and on its way out   :-/

I imagine so too.   Think I'll give the WD40 a go first.

Yep I have the same problem with the drivers door lock too!  It seems to be ok after a good soak in the sun, but in the morning as I go to work, it won't shift without the help of the key.

I did visit my local scrap yard for a replacement today, although I had to settle for a passenger side lock. The motors on both pre and post face life models seem to be the same, as does all the locks on the car doors.  Although my problem persists even after a successful transplant.  :(

I noticed that without the locking mechanism in place, the motor fires in and out like it's on heat, but as soon as the mechanism is bolted on, it won't budge at all!
Am I right in thinking that the motor magnets are so old and weak that the motor looses poke?

I guess that this type of repair needs a breakers/dealer rather than the scrap yard I visited today.
