Hi All,
      
Im gonna be replacing my seal on staurday and i have a couple of questions:

What size is the diff pinion nut? do i need a deep socket to fit on to it?
when replacing the diff pinion nut, is there a torque setting i need to set it at? or is it a case of line up the punch marks?

You need a 30mm deep socket and a 3 legged puller....you fit the nut back to where it cam off i.e. line the marks you made up and count the turns.

Its worth checking the oil level first just in case it has to much in it....

Use a bit of spray paint etc to mark the propshaft-dougnut-pinion flange alignment.

Make sure that you mark accurately between nut and flange before moving the nut and again between flange and pinion shaft before removing the flange.

You will be applying lots of force so make sure the car is properly supported, I used ramps which made access to one of the propshaft bolts difficult but meant that I didnt need someone to press the brake while undoing pinion nut. You could bolt a length of angle iron to the flange to hold it still if you have to do it with the wheels raised.

You will lose some oil so check level and top-up afterwards.

SUCCESS!!! . Took around 6.5 hours (garage quoted 5 hours). took my time and hey presto no leaks and all new oil. Not much oil came out once the seal was out maybe less then a quarter of a litre, which i found to be quite a shock because it wouldnt of been long before it would have been bone dry  .

Me too, my car sailed thro its recent MOT, but when it was up on the ramp I noticed the Diff a bit wet. What size hammer do you use.........

Yes!!

6.5 hours though  

I am too scared to touch the diff, I have a tendency to snap bolts

It took that long because I had to pop out for the puller (20 mins). It took around 20 mins to get car set up on ramps.  I was also stood around talkin to my cousin while the oil dripped out, prob could have had the job done in around 4 hours. The garage also reckoned they would have to drop the exhaust too, but I didnt.

I used a little tac hammer to start off putting the seal back in then moved on to a rubber mallet with my secret weapon to get it in until there was enough thread to get the nut back on and pull it all the way home.

P.S Tunnie, I was scared of snapping bolts too but, i got a lot of force on them and they stood up to the job, a torque rwrench would be ideal, except on the diff bolt itself.
