Front struts top mounting bush replacement
« on: 22 March 2007, 19:54:25 »

Hello again chaps; the camber adjustment is making progress; thanks to all who left messages.  New concern is a clonk when REVERSING over small undulations, ie off a 1/2" raised parking bay onto the main street .  This has been isolated to the driver's side front; it happens to a lesser extent on forward travel, but is a loud and painful clonk when going backwards at low speed.  Wheel bearings and bottom balljoints seem fine; my mechanic friend David reckons it's the top strut bush, and says he can feel the knock when putting his hand on the top of the strut inside the bonnet as I reverse slowly.  He additionally says the strut appears to be lying at a different angle o/s compared to n/s when looking at the mounting flange on top of the rubber on top of the turret.  Also lock to lock there is a groaning from the o/s strut when stationary.  Help?!  Thanks again in advance for your suggestions; I'd appreciate advice also on whether the bushes are available separate from the strut assembly themselves, for cost saving purposes :-[.  PS yes I go over a lot of speedbumps  :-?

Has your friend ruled out track rod ends?.  To check for play, jack up the wheel, hold it at 9 & 3 position and it shoud not move side to side.

I had a clonking sound on mine when going over bumps and potholes, changing the wishbone mountings, balljoints and the steering idler sorted it out for me, no noise, nice and smooth and stopped it pulling to the left as much.
