Manual gearbox oil change
« on: 23 April 2007, 10:32:52 »

I think it would be a good idea for me to replace the oil in my gearbox as it is a bit low.
Now I know that i am best using the latest specification oil, and have been advised that the capacity is 1.2 litres.  Can anyone confirm, and does anyone know how much the stuff is from Vx?
I think i will need double quantity as the book of lies recomends draining, refilling, running for 15 miles then draining and filling again.

Its expensive from Vx but I couldnt find an equivalent list I could believe (one even suggested EP80!!) so I submitted to open wallet surgery and bought 2 litres, put just over half a litre in and went for a gentle run then drained and refilled.
You need to make a dipstick, welding rod is usually suggested but an allen key works just as well.

Made quite a difference to the gearchange and stopped the gears chattering at idle when hot.

I doing mine and the stuff Vauxhall have given me is part No V0093165290 and it cost 12.46 for 3 litres.
I intend to drain and refill the box.  Also it doesn't look like EP80, its quite thin.

That's fairly price for gearbox oil.  Will 3 litres be enough for drain and fill twice?

3 litres is fine, I did mine today and it took 1 1/2 to do and that included a 20 mile drive in between the changes. You will need a bottle with a long nozzel to fill the gearbox as the filler is on the side and theres no room between the exhaust and filler hole :y

Yep filling is very tricky. Someone suggested a long hose and filling it from the engine bay - not a bad idea.
