Hello

I am hoping you maybe able to help me with a problem!!

Omega 3.0 V6
1997

Just had the exhaust manifold gaskets done and a new exhaust.

On looking at the coolant it had a lot of "brownish mayonaise" in it so we flushed the system though and got clear coolant flowing through however more of this mayo started to appear on running.  Dip stick clear of it but oil filler cap had some evidence of it and the neck but habe only been doing small distance in her.  She is not overheating but is running a bit rough at idle think she is missing on one of the plugs.

Thought the HG was on the way put so put in K-Seal and have seen a slight improvement however now getting oil in the header tank not the brown mayo. Still not overheating though.

Have looked at the other posts on oil in the coolant, and they suggest oil cooler failure.

Is this the case or is it a HG as we first suspected.

Ow no....not the dreaded K-seal....doesa more damage than good in my experiance.....plus given that its oil getting into the water there is little hope of it sealing anything..

Its not headgasket....its a failed oil cooler....which is an oil to water heat exchanger sat in the valley...

costs about 100 ish in parts to put right....

As far as headgasket failure is concerned remember that this is a dry liner engine.....in this scenario you would need high pressure oil to get into the high pressure coolant....its not going to happen as there is only a single high pressure oil feed which is well sealed and a reasonbale distance from the coolant jacket, the rest are low pressure oil returns....

In reality head gasket failures give

1) Water use and pressurisation due to a water to cylinder failure

2) Water in the oil...as the gasket has failed and there are lots of high water ways and low pressure oil returns from the head

Easy enough to do...about 3-4 hours work...plus some coolant system flushing required.....

Ideally you need a 19mm crowsfoot socket to undo the oil pipes at the oil filter end.

that k-seal stuff makes a right mess, seen that in TB's project 2. Awful stuff!

I would allocate a day for that task, its straight forward to do.

My advice is get new oil cooler bolts when re-fitting, as the old ones always seam to shear off!

Yeah, the front one snapped on me when doing TB1 oil cooler. I believe TIS states they should be replaced when the oil cooler is replaced?

Yes, and you shearing that banjo caused my favourite leadlamp to get broken  ::) ;D

Instant HG repairs, such as K seal, are bad news in my book.  Its hardly likely to hold for long on a HG failure, and just cloggs up the cooling system. Trust me  >:(
