I really just don't know where to turn. I've tried leaving the TC on the driveplate, and mating up the box... engine won't turn that way

I've also tried engaging the TC in the box first, and then connecting to the driveplate..

Either way, when it's reassembled, the engine won't turn.

Markie is home at 5, and can help me with some manpower... but technically, I don't know what to try now.

Apart from a Jerry can and a match

To make matters worse... I need it for work at 6am tomorrow - else i WILL be in trouble, of the formal type

Wish i were closer James so i could lend a hand. I do remember changing an autobox a long while ago and suffering the same sort of problem in that by the time i had got the gearbox in place the TC had disingaged from the dogs and not allowing the bellhousing to meet the engine. It may also be worth measuring if you can the distance from the front of the TC to the face of the BH on both the old and new box to  see if they are the same if you have not already done it. Could the bellhousings be different? Like on a TD, when retro fitting an AR35, you need to use the AR25 bellhousing

this is an AR25 box replacing an AR35...

It's all a learning curve.. the annoying thing is, I sucesfully did one of these on a 2.0 and it wasn't nearly this bad.

I'm just wondering, if, rather than me doing something wrong, it's actually the bellhousing! It's ten times harder doing jobs like this on your own, I hate to think what that box weighs!

Maybe a silly suggestion but is the car in neutral or park.

When I changed the clutch on my 2.0 I couldnt turn the driveshaft doughnut until it was in neutral when trying to relocate the gearbox centre pin into the engine hope this makes sense.

When you say the engine wont turn do you mean the clutch isn't engaging or the engine is not turning over.

no clutch - it's an auto

the Engine is seized when trying to turn on the crank pulley

it can only be something jamming the drive plate.. but what - beats me

Ok

First off......is the box in neutral.....



1) Check ths spiggot bearing on the crank end is empty.....apply a small amount of grease to the inside face...
2) Check seating for torque converter on fluid pump shaft – Dimension "2" = 15 mm.
3) Check free movement of threaded bores (1) in torque converter.
4) Check centring journal (3) of torque converter for frictional rust and lubricate.
