Gear Selector Lights
« on: 12 May 2007, 11:17:15 »

WTF? My Elite has just started behaving strangely in respect of the gear selector lights in the console. They dont obey the actual position of the lever for example, start up and the 'N' light is on. Put into 'D' and the '3' lights up momentarily before settling in 'D'. Occasionally all the lights light up and the 'AUTOMATIC GEARBOX' message appears, and no power or gear change. Pull up, turn it all off, start back up, and once it has 'settled' in 'D' its as good as gold until you have to select another gear. Selector switch maybe? The box is smooth thru all the changes and the problem has only started since we have had a very wet few days. Water penetration or coincidence. If the switch needs replacing how much are these. I will have a go at cleaning it and re-adjusting it as per the Haynes Manual but its more of a niggle than anything. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Ta.

I'd bet a gonad on the selector switch.

I'm currently doing a HOW2 on how to remove and clean it.. easy job.. and fixes a large number of switches with this problem...

Thanks James. I suspected a fault there. You know today it's been absolutely fine? I bet water gets into it as it is quite exposed. Bloody thing..... ;D

I had the same, the lights didn't agree where the gearstick was, To get it to drive properly without going into limp mode i used to put the gearstick into 3rd, drive off as normal then slip it into D when up to speed, usually worked and enabled me to drive around till I changed the switch.

New switches from Vx are about £120 :-(

Why replace it?

Peice of piddle to remove, take the casing apart, and clean. All that switch is, is a set of electrical contacts.. get some contact cleaner in there... fixes many probs

Do that before condemning it!
