This is on a V6 ?
I might be looking at a similar job myself, just havnt confirmed where the leak is yet.
Are you sure that it isnt leaking from the oil pressure sensor? A good clean with degreaser might help you track the path of the oil, trouble is that it gets blown everywhere so its difficult to work out where its coming from
It seems that leaks from the front seal are fairly rare, most likely it is leaking from alloy sump - block joint or from oil pump - block joint.
To reseal the sump joint requires the front subframe to be lowered and that means supporting the engine from above.
The oil pump joint requires the A/C to be degassed and compressor removed then remove the cambelt etc and the toothed crank pulley.
To remove the toothed crank pulley (your original question) you MUST bolt a length of steel angle etc to the pulley and use that to stop the pulley turning, if you try to do it by locking the crank or putting it in gear etc then you will shear the pulley drive pin.
