The Vx original pipes and silencers are twin walled with a layer of sound absorbing fibre between the walls which makes them much quieter but is expensive to manufacture.

I once fitted a pattern front pipe and cat to a 2.0 because I couldnt afford a genuine one but regretted it as the noise was wearing over a long journey. Eventually found a good second hand one to fit...bliss.

Useful to know thanks. The bits he removed were original parts so that might explain it. Thanks all for the info and support on this one.
