Weird noise - clutch? gearbox? transmission?
« on: 30 May 2007, 23:31:08 »

OK - apologies for the VERY vague description, but here goes...  :-?

Got an odd noise that's just started and is very intermittent. It reminds me a bit of putting a playing card in your spokes on your bike as a kid :D
Sort of tk-tk-tk-tk-tk-tk  but quite rapid.

Only seem to hear it when slowing down, and in gear, the revs about 2k.
If I use the clutch it goes, and revving the engine doesn't make it so I'm guessing it's transmission somewhere
and it almost sounds like it's behind the gearbox. I could be talking rubbish here!

It doesn't always happen, but possibly I don't notice it with the music on  :-/

Any ideas? I'm going to try and take a look underneath just to make sure somethings not obvious.

It's an '03 3.2v6 Manual

dies it happen on idle and in neutral? and when "freewheeing" do you here it?

boxes on these are pretty bombproof to be honest.....

....the sound makes me think of exhaust manifold...although again not a known issue on 3.2 more of an issue on 2.2`s

It seem to go when I engage the clutch, and I think I've heard it when freewheeling.

It sounds like somethings rubbing, or clicking on something else - Sheesh, how cr@p am I at describing stuff! lol

It does sound exhaust manifoldy.

Otherwise perhaps a clutch pressure plate or friction plate problem. The drive bands on my clutch pressure plate failed and I had some occassional metallic rattling from the clutch housing, then a period (months) of nothing then changing gear got very hard.

OK, so new clutch plate, or exhaust manifold.

How does the exhaust end up making that noise?

Either way I'm happy nobody has said gearbox snafu etc.  :y

You really need to try to differntiate between an engine noise, a gearbox noise or a 'motion' transmission noise.

If it happens at 2k revs, then it should be possible to replicate it when stationary.  If you can, its more probably engine, and therefore more probably an exhaust manifold leak.

If, when driving, you depress the clutch and it goes but the car continues to freewheel, sounds like a gearbox/clutch type fault.

If the noise remains when freewheeling at 20 mph or whatever speed it happens at, then its a driveshaft issue.

I would be eduguessing at exhaust heat shields loose and vibrating.  A hose clamp tightened around them is a good substitute for rusted bolts.  Its by far and away the cheapest and easiest fix.

I appreciate my explanations are vague at best...

It doesn't happen when I rev at 2k stationary, and it only happens intermittently at the moment. If I do hear it, and engage the clutch and freewheel it seems to go so that would point to gearbox / clutch. Possibly clutch plate as sugegsted earlier.

I'll get it checked over soon anyways, hopefully pointing the garage in the right direction - Thanks for all the comments :D

Anyone have any good independents in S Wales?

Do you hear the same noise when reverse gear is engaged when using low revs :question

Hi nope, reverse gives no noise. Just occasionally when slowing down for a roundabout etc.

You say when slowing down at roundabouts, I'm assuming you mean when you press the clutch and brake pedal together, are you pressing the clutch pedal right to the floor when doing this.

Could be the release bearing still slightly engaged spinning and with the flywheel still spinning with the engine its still making contact and rubbing. Think thats how it works could be an idea.

Being its a manual have you checked the bell housing for any brake / clutch fluid, have you noticed any change in braking as i think the clutch and brake system use the circuit, could be the clutch slave cylinder is on its last legs.

Just a few ideas
