I would get the cambelt, tensioner and water pump doen, make sure its got a 50:50 antifreeze mix in it to.

As for a 'safe' VW engine......it must be an old one then!

Yeah, coolant flush/change is on the to-do list, but I guess if I do get the belt and waterpump professionally done, it would make sense to get them to do this at the same time. Whoever 'them' might be, and at the risk of ratcheting the bill up even more... :'(

you could get the parts from auto vaux i done my water pump, belt,coolant recently and got all the parts from them almost £50 cheaper than main stealer and they were origanol parts, if you live any where near kent i know a good mechanic who knows the 2 ltr engine like the back of his hand, hes done everything on mine recently and its sweet as a nut
