Please Help!!
« on: 04 June 2007, 19:04:48 »

Hi all,
found you while searching for Omega probs. Great site, just joined and will stay!
Right, I have a beautiful 2.2 CD Dti Omega on a 51 plate. Its the best car Ive ever had and have had 2 and a half years wonderful trouble-free motoring.
Ive spent the last 2 hours with you looking through the site and it seems there are threads with similar problems although slightly different so I post this in the hope that you can help me identify exactly what the problem is!
I can drive with the engine cold without problem for a couple of miles. Then the EML comes on, I lose power, the rev counter goes to zero. Funny thing is, in the Owners Manual, it mentions this (????). It says it is an emissions problem but the EMU is programmed to allow me to drive up to 40mph (which it does). A couple of threads say that I cannot do the paper clip test after a 1999 model so havent tried.
I dont want to be ripped off by Vauxhall, nor do I wish to pay Mr Government Man a hefty chunk of VAT. So can you guys identify what part of my car is kapput?
Another problem is that Ive just driven 230 miles to Wales for a weeks fishing with the missus in her new clit. I am going again in July but the other half is adamant that I cannot wear the beard and dark glasses again! So please you guys - help!!!!!
I will be forever in your debt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To read the ECU codes, try a cheap ‘tech2’ device off eBay (around £30 but you will need a laptop with a Serial port), or ask a local independent with a code reader to have a look, wouldn’t cost as much as to have it done by Vx. If you post the fault code someone will be able to help.

Does the cheapo Tech2 work on 2.2Dti?

Hi all and thanks for a quick response!! And hi TheBoy. Sorry, Im in South Yorkshire. So I can read the codes on a 2001 model? Another thing I forgot to mention. I was driving it home tonight and I got to a hill. Luckily there was nothing behind me. I had to go up in second gear and the acceleration slowly climbed until I was almost at 40mph near the top. The revs were very high at this point and then without warning the car righted itself and took off like a bat out of hell, I nearly ended up in a cows rear! It got me home with no problem (about 2 miles) but then packed in again!
There seems to be a lot of talk about the cam sensor. Two of my friends at work have older Vectras with similar problems and one of them says he removed the idler valve, cleaned it, and has had no problems since. He had a look under my bonnet but said it was totally different to his engine and didnt have a clue where to begin looking.
Are the codes exclusive to this car/model? Or are they pretty standard Vauxhall codes? And can anyone tell me which pins I need to jump to get them? Many thanks.

AFAIK you can't flash out the codes on a facelift so it would have to be read by tech 2 or similar

Hi all again. Ive been out having a clueless look at the car. Ive checked all the wiring - no apparent loose ones or wear. I took the eco cover off the rocker top and found what I think to be an air inlet valve. Took it off and it had a valve beneath it that was completely covered in crap! Given it all a good clean (spotless), still no better. Someone surely must have an idea what this possibly is? From what Ive read on the site, putting aside broken/shorting wiring, Im guessing (oh no!!!) cam sensor or Oxygen sensor. So what would happen if I locate them (where are they?) and disconnect them? How would my little beauty respond?

Ok, a few points to make first...

Its a diesel so doesn't have an idle valve.

On this lump, the fist thing to check is ALL the vac pipes for splits and damage.......

Hi Mark, had a look at what you suggested today. All pipes etc look in good condition and solid. Beginning to think it really is like the Owners Manual says - an emissions problem. It will always drive ok from cold for a mile or so, even the eml goes out, then the trouble starts! So Im guessing its being caused by engine warming up or emissions building up? Like I said in my first post, I find it very strange that Vauxhall should identify this EXACT problem in an owners manual, they are very specific that it is an emissions problem but dont say what part it is caused by. I have no excessive smoke so Im seriously thinking its a sensor. Many on here suggest cam sensor but would that cause this? Maybe an Oxygen sensor? Does seem to fit the bill a little easier, but then I am only guessing! All suggestions gratefully recieved!!!

The diesel can be difficult to read the codes on as there are two systems. I am guessing that it is the emmisions light which is coming on and not the electronics one ( the car with the spanner).

When my emmisions light came on due to a faulty glow plug my generic OBD2 scanner did not pick it up as it is a Vauxhall coding system which required tech 2 to read and correct. The scanner has only been used on other cars to date and has worked okay so I guess the information on the emmisions codes is correct.

Sorry it looks like a tech 2 analysis to get teh fault codes.
