Brake disc retaining screw's!!
« on: 21 September 2007, 21:50:19 »

Why do people do up the retaining screw on the disc's? I tried to take the screw of the rear disc this afternoon but it was stuck solid. Tried drilling it out, using a cold chisel and it still wouldn't budge. Now what am I going to do? I realy need to take the rear disc off so I can check the h/brake shoe's and the spring's etc. Does anyone have any advise?

Sorry, no... other then the usual spraying / tapping/ drilling etc...  :(

But what I do tell people is that if you don't have a low-torque wrench there is no need to worry about the 4NM, this screw needs to be very lightly tightened with a normal screw driver (not a wrench) because it can not go anywhere, it has the wheel pressing on it and at any rate there is zero force working on it since the wheel stud take the brunt of it anyway. Oh, and some copper grease on re-assembly... but this dot not help you now.  :(

I had a hell of a game getting mine out of the front discs, think they were done up with a fifteen foot scaffold bar  >:(

I find that an impact driver works 99/100 times as long as the cross head of the screw is not already mullered....

Got my impact driver 20 plus years ago and its got me out a fix more than once.  Plus you can add a socket to it as well.....   :y

Beat me to it Broocie

1. spray penetrating fluid on screw.
2. have cuppa
3. using 5mm hex and an impact driver, give it a thump with your rubber mallet and they come off everytime.

Yup, impact driver is a handy bit of kit, esp if you own older jap bikes with their monkey metal screws.

Impact driver is the way.

If you can't get one and need to do the job in a hurry then grip an expendable screw driver with a pair of mole grips and at the same time as pressing it into the screw head whack the screwdriver and turn it.

Not an engineering or purists solution but it works.

Thanks for everyone's reply but..........

1) Don't have a impact wrench.
2) The head is well and truly breaked up now!
3) Haven't got a decent chisel to whack it out.
4) No money to buy one either
5) Don't get paid until next Friday.

So all I can do now is  :'( :( :'( :( :'( :(

Its of no use to you, I know, but I have left hand drill bits that also work quite well.  Sometimes the stubborn screw unscrews itself as the drill bit bites as its turning in the correct direction to remove the screw.

Similar to the following but you also get them as stubby drills rather than full length to reduce possibility of snapping....
