Electrical Computer problem
« on: 19 August 2007, 06:25:12 »

Hi I have a 1992 Omega 3000 12V version, The electrical computer onboard which tells you the fuel usage,  time, temperature has gone haywire and when the car is running it jumps to 38 then back down to 0 and other random digits. Is there a way to tune the computer back to original setting. Also the window buttons don't work. Is this due to the computer malfunction?

Any info would be helpful thanks

This is presumably an Omega A (known as a Carlton in the UK)?  Sorry, I don't know much about them.  Hopefully someone will be along soon who can help.

Hi Logan,

First things to check is the voltage of the battery on the car. Should be at least 12.00v and no more than 15.0v when car engine is running. If low on charge, from alternator, then this can cause the various systems to go hay wire.

Check also for good earths to the battery, chassis and engine. Again if these are wrong then it will give the electrical items the wrong signals.

Has any thing been disturbed, i.e. bulbs been recently replaced or such so that the wiring has been moved at the rear of the 'on board computer'?

The window buttons/switches are not the most robust of things. When my Carlton windows stopped working it turned out to be poor connections inside the switch. Had to strip the thing down to component parts and clean with a fibreglass brush.

look forward to see how you do and will look out more information to see what I still have on the beast.

As TB said you have what we over here in the U.K. call a Carlton model. But an Omega is an Omega and I will try to help you out.

Hi there thanks for replying, I changed the battery recently as it was sitting in the shed for a extended period of time. But it has been doing this for a while now so it most probably isn't the battery.

Also what is the difference between the carlton model and the other omegas? Is it just the name or are there different engine specifications etc?

Many Thanks

I would be looking for good earths and connections first. What voltage is your battery charging at?

Carlton (Omega-A) and Vauxhall Omega (Omega-B) have different engines (except 2.0l), newer electronics, wiring, interiors, exteriors. Very different, though i suspect they share a few bits...

12 Volts i believe.

See if you can check with a meter to make sure as it is important. 12 volt battery's although 12v can be 11.5v up to 14-15v.

This voltage reading is important as it willcan help in diagnosis with your electrical problem.

Are you saying its just the outside temperature gauge thats all over the place......if so more than likely just the outside temp sensor is broken......easy fix....just replace it  :y

Its not just the temperature gauge, the distance per Litre and the other doohickies have gone nuts...it jumps from 10 to 50 then zero and just shows random numbers even after idling for five minutes on the spot...

DaveL: I'll check it soon i've been busy with work so haven't had a chance to check thanks

Sounds like either a volts/charging issue as DaveL indicates or simply an intermittant connection from one of the sensors such as fuel guage, ABS/odo pickup, similar to that on our Omega's.  Does the main fuel guage go duff when the computer is throwing a wobbly?

Is your car fitted with the digital dash by any chance, or does it have conventional analogue guages?  Reason I ask is that my Carlton GSi went electrically screwball for a while and it turned out to be the contacts on the rear of the printed plastic circuit board.  I would suggest carefull cleaning and checking.
