Check it had a documented cambelt and tensioner change at 80,000.

Make sure all the gadgets work OK. If it's auto check it changes smartly with no slip. Check the warning lights all come on with ignition and go out on startup in case any have been disconnected.

Usual checks for condition of coolant (no oil / sludge) and oil (a bit of mayo in the filler cap is normal if it's been used for short trips).

Ensure steering is precise without too much wandering, tyre wear is even.

Engine should idle smoothly, at about 500-600 rpm warm without any tappety noises. Check the tappets quieten quickly at startup. A little rattle from the injectors is normal but should be quiet otherwise. Ticking noises from the exhaust manifolds particularly at startup from cold are indicative of manifold gasket leaks which is bad news.

Check the air con blows cold.

About all I can think of at the moment but I'm sure more advice will be forthcoming....

There are also all the general checks...

Bounce each corner in turn to check for tired shocks or broken springs.

Check the condition of the brake discs visually through the alloy wheels.

Check operation of hand brake.

Have a look under the rear of the car and check for rusty back box.

Also, under the 'check all gadgets' don't forget to check the electric sunroof (if fitted), electric windows, and central locking.

However, don't kick the tyres or slam the doors...  ;D
