Manual Gearbox types
« on: 07 September 2007, 00:37:34 »

Hi Guys,

Just wondering about manual gearboxes on Omega's. Do the 2.5 and 3.0 models have different boxes fitted? If so, are there significant improvements to the boxes fitted on the 3.0?

Cheers
James

good old r25(cable clutch) and r28(hydraulic clutch on 3 litre, slight ddiffernce in gear ratios not  much, but r28 is the stronger box,
they are both getrag units which are i believe 240 designation, :y

I have not looked yet, I presume my 2.5 V reg would be a hydraulic clutch?

Still familiarising myself with my new toy  8-)

Mr Omegatoy is unfortunately wrong.

R25 and R28 (R28 fitted to 3.0).....both have hydraulic coaxial clutch release setups and they are both made by ZF.......infact the only key difference is the R28 has slightly different ratios and is a little stronger. having said that....the manual box is bomb proof and fully synchroed

not gonna argue thereAs i could be wrong but i thought they were carried over from the senators, which are getrag boxes, vaux wouldnt pay the price for zf??? r28 is max 280nm torque and r25 max250nm torque, but the manual is bomb proof?? no way its easily shredded in a modded straight six,  :-X

There not the same boxes as the Carlton and Senator.

I'm pretty pleased there not Getrag as there bloody awful to work on and yes, they are a weaker box.

Ooooohhhh, 2 knowledgable ones have a debate ;D

I do know R25 and R28 both have hydraulic clutches, and are strong - rare to see failure, the odd syncro occasionally.

As to who makes them, or which are strongest, I leave this for others to battle out ;D

At least if you'd got a manual 2.5TD you'd still be on the original box by the time the third engine goes in ;)

Oi, wot's all this 2.5td knocking going on 'ere ??

I have one manual with 86k on the clock and an Auto (with knackered rear shock top mount) with 223k on the clock. Not started it for about a month and it started 1st time and runs "sweet as a nut" ...as they say.

(Never could understand that "sweet as a nut" saying tho' !!).

Aye, when the tractors are running, they work. Gutless, noisy, and smelly, but work ;D

When they are not working, it seems to be a right PITA...

223k auto? bet thats not original box ;)
