squeeling clutch
« on: 15 October 2007, 16:55:44 »

Can anyone help.
I have a 2.0 16v 1999 facelift omega and the clutch has started to squeel when its depressed, when its  not depressed the noise goes away. The noise is coming from the front of the engine near the pulley wheels. I have changed the clutch. thrust bearing and the dual mass flywheel, I would be greatfull of any ideas as to what the noise is and how to rectify it.

Anyone?

I would have fist enquired about the thrust bearing, but that's been done :(

I don't know a lot about hydraulic clutches, maybe I will learn more when I rip mine out....

you also have a bearing in the rear of the crank which is only used when the clutch is depressed, this allows the engine to keep turning whilst allowing the first motion shaft of the gearbox to remain stationary, thus allowing you to change gear.could also in extreme cases cause clutch drag

Thrust bearing, the other being the release bearing.
Make sure they have both been changed.

The other option is that there's too much endfloat on the crankshaft and it's moving forward under pressure from the clutch and the front pulley is fouling on the timing belt cover :o

Endfloat is usually controlled by thrust washers incorporated into one of the big end bearings so it's a bit of a job to change it.

Get someone to step on the clutch while you watch the front pulley. If it comes forward by a noticeable amount that's probably your issue.

I suspect Sassanch is refering to the crank spigot bearing.

I would be checking end float to......never seen this cause a problem on a GM engine though.

D'oh! Deliberate mistake there. I did of course mean main bearing ::)

I'd be surprised if it was that too but, if the sound appears to be coming from the front of the engine, it starts to look more likely.
