Noisey and heavy power steering
« on: 17 October 2007, 19:26:00 »

My steering seems very heavy at idle and when reversing onto the driveway.
It also makes a horrible noise on full lock, like a squeeking/squeeling noise  :o
Any suggestions people?

1. Check fluid level/condition

2. Check the belt is not slipping on the pulley

3. Check pump bearings.

Thanks for the quick reply..........

1.Level ok and fluid replaced

2. Would the belt squeel if it was slipping and is it easy to change?

3. How do I check the pump bearings?

The belt would probably only squeal if it was having difficulty turning the pulley. Sounds like you need to take the belt off and have a feel for lateral play in the bearing or if it is difficult to turn by hand. I'm not that familiar with four pots but it shouldn't be a difficult job.

Do it sooner rather than later or it may seize altogether.

Can you get your hand in to feel the pulley immediately after using the car? If it is so hot it takes the skin off, I reckon it's the bearings ;D ;D ;D

Sorry :-[
