coolant temperature
« on: 22 October 2007, 09:02:53 »

Hi all,
I have a 2.5 V6 1998 omega, the water temp gets on highest setting then fan kicks in, the fan sounds different , I understand that there are two fan switches could it be that one of these has stopped working. Everything was fine until last week. Yesterday did coolant flush and new anti freeze mixture.

What do you mean by 'highest setting'.   Do you mean its in the red?

The fan should first come on long before it reaches anywhere near the red zone.  Around 98 degrees I recall although others will confirm.   Then it comes on at high speed at a higher threshold.

Yes its in the red, the thermometer on the gauge lights up red then the fan kicks in, I have been told it could be that the car has 2 fans switches and only one is working, but dont know if top switch is the highest setting or bottom switch

Provided that the V6 is the same as my 2L, the switch is one item with three connectors. It's white and cylindrical in shape. Should be at the radiator below the top coolant hose. Something like this:

Or possibly like this:

Mine failed a while back. First fan never kicked in at ~95ish, then it started to run at high speed all the time. The car sounded like an airplane. I have never experienced that the high speed fan kicks in when driving normally. Temp shouldn't reach red either.

just in case not obvious, do not drive (or run) it in the red - that will do irepeairable damage.

Take the plastic cover off the car above the rad and run the car at idle. When the temp gets to about 98 then the fan should cut in and run untill the temp gets to 95 then cut out. the fan speed is controlled by the temp sender on the side of the rad and the highest speed only works above 100 check the fan runs. if it does not then check the fan fuse in the fuse box. DO NOT ALLOW THE TEMP TO GET IN THE RED. IT WILL OVERHEAT THE HEADS AND WARP THEM. :y

Been out and done about 10-12 mile, temp gauge did not go over 95-98. My rad is showing 2 switches , if top one is for fan , what is bottom for, sorry if I am being thick.
Fan does work but appears to be different from last week , ie not as loud or as fast.

AFAIK the fan should always be on (low speed) if you switch AC on.   If you have it on now that could be bypassing the switch..

top switch is low speed fan, bottom is high speed. Low speed comes on just above midpoint on gauge, high just below 100 on gauge.  Letting it hit red WILL destroy it.
