I've nearly sorted my 2.5 td out, but I think it must hate me coz all of a sudden it only wants to start on 3 or 4 cylinders when cold

It was fine when I got it and looks as though its had glow plugs (inlet manifold gasket gooed back on) and glow plugs dont usualy go off in 2 s and 3s, so I dont think its them.
 
Also has an oil/diesel leak at the front top n/s side of engine, I've changed the rubber return pipes and fuel filter but it made no difference

Its fine when even remotely warm.
Any ideas before I start on it

If it's ok when warm then I'd say glow plugs. Dont take it for granted that they are ok........Poor starting with a deisel is usually down to the air temperature, especially now, so my first port of call would be these.

Knackered glow plugs, or a diesel leak around injectors...

I picked up my Miggy in Jan and had the same problem, had to glow it 3-4 times then it would drag itself to life on 2 or 3 cylinders chugging sh1te out the back of it. Really annoying.

Changed glow plugs, replaced oil & filter, air filter put a couple of bottles of redex and diesel magic through it (including filling the filter with it).

After this, glow once, start everytime   - even when it was freezing in the mornings. (make sure you have at least 25 litres of diesel in Tank all the time)

Might be worth a try?

I'm going to take the inlet manifold off and have a look, 1) cos its a fair old leak and 2) when I tried to change the oil filter some numbty had tightened it so much the plastic nut sheared
so I'll do the glow plugs its off, and put a new fuel filter on.

You can also check the electric pump in tank. If it's fault, can be problems with cold start. Or somewhere between tank and engine air come in to the fuel system.
