Breathers/rocker gaskets
« on: 09 November 2007, 14:21:18 »

Right .. I think (hope ?  :) ) I have now obtained all the required tools/cleaners/gaskets/o-rings/seals/sealant in order to replace the gaskets and clean the breathers.

I have read and re-read the "how to's" and printed out copies to take outside with me.....

I intend to strip it down, replace the gaskets, and clean the breathers as I rebuild .. does this make sense ?

Any one any other tips/tricks I need to know before wrecking doing my engine ??  :)

Finally....  having never done this .. what is a REALISTIC time scale .. I know thats a bit like "how long is a piece of string" .. but ideas would be nice BEFORE I start !!!

regards.. in trepidation ...

3-4 hours for a first time.

Clean the items as you take them off and set them out ready for re-fit.

If you are following the "How To" I should think you will be fine, just take your time don't try and rush, if it takes you all day it will be a job well done, plus saving yourself loads of money:y

I would take pics and label pipes etc as you disconnect them.   In particular I found it was easy to mix up the fuel hoses with each other and the two small breather pipes.   Also there is no need to detach the throttle cable - I found that impossible - just leave it attached and clean the throttle body in situ on the car.  Also before putting the plenum back, check you haven't dislodged any HT leads off the DIS pack (I had ;)).

Worth changing your spark plugs at the same time as access is much better.

Watch the Carb Cleaner too - it'll melt plastic gloves in seconds - but seems ok on skin.  Wierd but true :-/

You can't mix up the fuel hoses - one is 17mm, one is 19mm...

Thanks for all the advice .. noted and recorded .. :)

I have 3 "how to's" printed

Plenum removal
Breather cleaning
CamCover Gasket changing

Last point (at the moment) ...  would you advise scuttle removal or not ?? The how to photo's all show it still there ... but I have large hands and wonder if I'll get easier access with the scuttle off.

So if the weather is good tomorrow ........... ( wish I could actually get the car in the garage .. but that hasn't happened for 6 years !!! )

:)

You don't need the scuttle off for cam cover gaskets, but it won't hurt if you want to....
